Espanyol is hosting Real Madrid at RCDE Stadium in part of round 32 in Spanish LaLiga.
Espanyol is playing terrible soccer this season, and I’m sorry to say this, but I think Espanyol will get relegated because they are not doing anything to avoid that. Espanyol is in the last place in the standings with only 24 points, huge 8 points away from the safe zone, and judging by their current form, Espanyol will not win many more points until the end of the season. Espanyol has scored only 26 lousy goals this season, while they conceded 50 goals. In their most recent LaLiga match against Betis on the road, Espanyol has had only 35% of ball possession, 3 shots on goal, 5 corner kicks, and low 69% of the correct passes. Espanyol was defending well, but as soon as they conceded a goal in the 48th minute, everything fell apart. Espanyol wasn’t able to get back on track and they lost this match 1-0. De Tomas and Lei are Espanyol’s top goal scorers with only 4 goals each. Sebastien Corchia is the only injured player for Espanyol. Absolutely nothing Espanyol does this season is working for them this season, and it’s going to sound harsh, but maybe it’s a good thing for Espanyol to get relegated and to regroup in LaLiga 2, and maybe get back to Spanish top division after the next season.
Real Madrid is playing fantastic soccer this season, maybe as not as offensive as they have been over the last few years, but their defense has been the best in a long, long time. Real has scored 10 goals in their last 4 games in LaLiga since the restart while conceding only 1 goal. Overall, this season, Real Madrid has conceded only 21 goals in 31 games this season and they are the best defensive team in LaLiga. Real Madrid is at the top of LaLiga with 68 points, the same amount as Barcelona in second place, but with the better head to head results. Benzema is having an outstanding season where he scored 17 goals and added 6 assists, while Ramos added 8 goals, and he is probably playing the best soccer of his career. Nacho, Vazquez, and Jovic are all injured, and Zidane will not have them at his disposal. In their last LaLiga game against Mallorca at home, Real Madrid was dominant with 55% of ball possession, 6 shots on goal, 5 corner kicks, and 88% of the correct passes. Real Madrid has deservedly so won this game 2-0 and has preserved its leading position in LaLiga. I know I’ve said that Real is not as offensive as they were before, but 59 scored goals is still a lot, and whatever offense Real Madrid is missing this season, they are compensating with an outstanding defense.
Espanyol hasn’t won any of their last 3 games against Real Madrid, while Real Madrid is on a 4-game winning streak. The trends are heavily on Real Madrid’s side in this matchup, and I think they will get another win here as they are a much, much better team.
