Athletic Bilbao is hosting Real Madrid at San Mames in round 34 in Spanish LaLiga.
Bilbao has been playing well as of late and they lost only 1 of their last 6 games since the restart. During this stretch, Bilbao has been playing outstanding defense and they conceded only 5 goals while scoring 9 goals. Athletic Bilbao is getting close to the Europa League and they are now in 78th place with 48 points, just 4 points behind Getafe in the last spot that leads to the Europa League, Bilbao isn’t an offensively oriented team and their 38 scored goals in on the lower side, but their defense, on the other hand, is one of the best in LaLiga. Athletic Bilbao has conceded only 28 goals. Raul Garcia is having a good season and he scored 13 goals for Bilbao, while Williams added 6 goals. Benat Etxebarria is the only injured player for Bilbao. In their most recent LaLiga match against Valencia on the road, Bilbao has had 49% of ball possession, 4 shots on target, 5 corner kicks, and 79% of the correct passes. With one goal in each half, Bilbao has won this game 0-2. Athletic Bilbao means business since the restart and I actually see them climbing to that 6th place because Getafe and Real Sociedad are not in as good form as Bilbao is.
Real Madrid is still winning games like they are nothing, but they have been struggling with scoring goals in their last two games. Real has won those two games, but only with 1 scored goal in each game. Since the restart, Real Madrid has conceded only 2 goals, while scoring 12 goals. Real Madrid’s defense is the best in LaLiga this season with only 21 conceded goals, and if they win the title this season, it will be because of that defense. Offensively, Real Madrid has scored 61 goals, but Benzema is not getting enough support and that’s why Real is struggling. Benzema has scored 17 goals and added 7 assists for Real Madrid this season, while Ramos added 9 goals. Looks like getting out of Ronaldo’s shadow did a lot of good for Benzema and I think this is the best season of his career. Nacho is still injured, while Reiner and Varane are questionable. In their most recent game in LaLiga against Getafe at home, Real Madrid was dominant with 67% of ball possession, 4 shots on goal, 6 corner kicks, and 85% of the correct passes. Real Madrid was attacking, but Getafe was defending well, and only by stupidity from Getafe’s defender in 79th minute, Real was awarded a penalty kick, which Ramos turned into a goal. Real Madrid has won this match 1-0. There are two games left for Real Madrid where they can slip up in my opinion, this one against Bilbao, and against Villarreal in two weeks. If Real can keep winning games, they will certainly win the title, and it will be well deserved.
The last game that Bilbao won against Real Madrid at home was back in 2015. This will be a test for Real Madrid, and if they pass, they are one step closer to the title, but I’m not yet ready to write Bilbao off. Bilbao is playing in a good form on both ends, while Real is struggling in the attacking end a bit. I will take a risk with Bilbao here.
