Espanyol is welcoming Leganes to RCDE Stadium in a derby of the bottom of the table in round 34 of Spanish LaLiga.
Espanyol is not playing well, and even though they still have a mathematical chance of getting outside the relegation zone, I don’t see it happening. Espanyol is in the last place with 24 points, a huge 10 points away from the safe zone. Espanyol hasn’t been good, not even decent, on either end, and they scored only 27 goals while conceding massive 53 goals. Espanyol is on a 4-game losing streak and they conceded 7 goals while scoring only 2 goals during this stretch. In their latest LaLiga game against Real Sociedad on the road, Espanyol has had only 37% of ball possession, 3 shots on goal, 3 corner kicks, and 74% of accurate passes. Surprisingly, Espanyol had the lead since the 10th minute, but Sociedad has turned the game around in the second half, and Espanyol lost this match 2-1. De Tomas, Lopez, and Lei are Espanyol’s top goal scorers with only 4 goals each. Embarba added 4 assists. There are no injuries for Espanyol, but Pipa is still questionable. Since there are no relegation playoffs this season, Espanyol’s only hope is to get out of the relegation zone, and they are no capable of doing that this season. I’m quite sure that Espanyol will get relegated to LaLiga 2.
Leganes is also playing terrible soccer and they are just 1 point above Espanyol, in 19th place with 25 points. Leganes is even worse than Espanyol in the attacking end with only 24 scored goals, but their defense has been slightly better with 49 conceded goals. Espanyol hasn’t won any of their last 6 games since the restart, including the most recent one against Sevilla at home. Leganes has had 41% of ball possession, 4 corner kicks, 3 shots on target, and 80% of the correct passes in this game. Sevilla was just too strong, and Leganes has lost this game 0-3. Carillo, Oscar, and Omerou are all injured, while Mesa is suspended because of the yellow cards. Oscar is Leganes’ top goal scorer with 9 goals, while Mesa added 3 assists. Same as Espanyol, if Leganes wants to stay in LaLiga, they need to get out of the relegation zone, which won’t happen because Leganes doesn’t have enough quality, and it’s too late in the season to make any significant changes.
I don’t expect this to be a particularly good game as both Espanyol and Leganes are not playing in good form, on either end. This could turn out to be a very rough game with extremely low significance to either of the teams. I will give it a shot at a draw here for a nice plus money.
