Sampdoria is welcoming Spal to Luigi Ferraris in round 30 in Italian Serie A.
Sampdoria is struggling this season, especially on the defensive end where they conceded 51 goals, but their latest win against Lecce on the road certainly had a massive positive impact on Sampdoria. In this game against Lecce, Sampdoria has had 41% of ball possession, 4 shots on goal, 5 corner kicks, and 79% of the correct passes. This was a game where we saw 3 penalty kicks, and all three were turned into goals. Fortunately for Sampdoria, they had 2 penalties, and Sampdoria has won this game 1-2. An interesting thing has happened to Sampdoria since the restart, they played 4 games and all of them ended with an identical result, 2-1, but the problem is that Sampdoria has won only 1 of those games. Sampdoria is now in 16th place in the standings with 29 points, 33 scored goals, and big 51 conceded goals, but they are not the worst at the bottom of the table. Quagliarella has scored 9 goals for Sampdoria this season, while Ramirez and Gabbiadini added 7 goals each. Ferrari and Tonelli are both injured, while Thorsby is suspended because of the yellow cards. Same as for most of the teams at the bottom of the standings, the schedule is never easy for Sampdoria and they will have a tough time for the rest of the season.
Spal is among the weakest teams in Serie A, and I believe they will get relegated alongside Brescia. With only 2 wins in their last 10 games, and 0 wins since the restart, Spal is in 19th place with 19 points, only 23 scored goals, and 50 conceded goals. Interestingly enough, Spal has the best defense of the last 5 teams in the standings and the weakest offense. Petagna has scored 12 goals for Spal so far this season, while Dabo added 3 assists in 7 games. D’Alessandro is suspended because of the red card, while Berisha, Zukanovic, Di Francesco, Fares, Reca, and Bonifazi are all injured, while Valoti is questionable. Maybe if this injury list is shorter, Spal would have been in a better situation, but we will never know. In their last Serie A game against Milan at home, Spal has had low 29% of the correct passes, 3 shots on goal, 3 corner kicks, and low 68% of the correct passes. The first half was actually fantastic for Spal, at least until the 43rd minute. Spal has scored 2 goals in the first half, but in 43rd minute they conceded a red card and it was a game over for Spal. Fortunately for Spal, Milan was able only to tie the game which ended in a 2-2 draw. Spal is only 7 points away from the safe zone, but I don’t think they have it in them to win another 7 points for the rest of the season.
Sampdoria has never lost to Spal at home, and of the six matches these two teams played in the past, Sampdoria has won 5 while Spal has won 1 game. With all the injuries in Spal, and their terrible form, there is only one choice here, and that is Sampdoria at home.
