Bologna is hosting Sassuolo at Renato Dall’Ara in round 31 in Italian Serie A.
Bologna hasn’t lost any of their last 3 games, and with that, Bologna is closer to the Europa League than the relegation zone. With 41 points, Bologna is in 9th place, just 7 points pots away from the Europa League, but I just don’t see them getting there because they lack depth and quality on the bench. Offensively, Bologna has been solid this season with 43 scored goals, while their defense is not bad, but it could be better. Bologna has conceded 47 goals. In their latest Serie A game against Inter on the road, Bologna has had only 38% of ball possession, 7 shots on goal, and 71% of the correct passes. This was a very interesting game where Inter had the lead at the half time, and an extra player because Bologna conceded a red card. In the 62nd minute, Bologna’s goalkeeper saved a penalty shot and Bologna was defending well after that. In the 74th minute, Bologna has scored a tying goal. In the 77th minute, Inter conceded a red card, and in the 80th minute, surprisingly, Bologna has scored the winning goal on the road. The final result was 1-2 for Bologna. Orsolini has scored 8 goals and added 4 assists for Bologna this season, while Barrow and Palacio both scored 6 goals. Santander, Olsen, and Poli are all injured, while Soriano is suspended because of the red card. Bologna can be happy about a lot of things this season, but I’m afraid they will need to wait another season for the Europa League.
Sassuolo has been playing great since the restart, especially in the attacking end where they scored massive 14 goals in their last 5 games. Their defense wasn’t as effective and Sassuolo conceded 13 goals. Sassuolo is safe, in 10th place with 40 points, 55 scored goals, and big 52 conceded goals. In their latest Serie A game against Lecce at home, Sassuolo was dominant with 65% of ball possession, 7 shots on goal, 4 corner kicks, and high 92% of the correct passes. Sure, Lecce is one of the weakest teams in Serie A, but it’s not like they are just standing on the field. Sassuolo has won this game 4-2. Caputo is Sassuolo’s top goalscorer with 15 goals, while Berardi and Boga each scored 11 goals. Romagna and Obiang are both injured, while Djuricic is suspended because of the yellow cards. There was a lot of good stuff in Sassuolo’s game this season, but more importantly, they realize that they have a potential for so much more. With a few more signing on the defensive end, Sassuolo could be a legit contestant for the Europa League next season, if they keep their most important players after this season of course.
Both Bologna and Sassuolo are in good form, and that win against Inter was a huge morale boost for Bologna. Both teams are scoring a decent amount of goals, but also neither Bologna nor Sassuolo are the pillars of security on the defensive end. I think I will look for something on goals here.
