Sheffield United host Wolverhampton on Wednesday, July 8th at Bramall Lane. Will Wolves bounce back after their defeat to Arsenal on the weekend, or will Sheffield United climb the league table?
Sheffield United drew their last match 1-1 against Burnley in what was a tough match for Sheffield. Sheffield United had to come back down from 1-0 to get a draw with an 80th minute John Egan goal. The match was extremely tight and prior to the match is was more expected that Sheffield would claim all 3 points. Sheffield are currently 9th in the league, 1 point behind 7th place. Sheffield United's hopes for the Europa League are not over as it only takes a couple of slip-ups in the top 7 for them to take advantage of the situation. With 5 games left to play in the Premier League, Sheffield United need to ensure they have all positive results in their last games.
Wolverhampton allowed Arsenal to win on the weekend, losing 2-0 to the Gunners. Arsenal had 48% possession but ensured that the 52% that Wolves had stayed concentrated in the center of the pitch and in Wolves' own half. The match was very tight, but an incredible Saka goal at the end of the first half, and a Lacazette shot at the end of the second half allowed for Arsenal to take all 3 points home. Wolves did not show their best and they have not been at their best since the restart. We know Wolves are a solid team, and if they want to keep their hopes alive for a Champions League/Europa League spot, they need to maintain their composure in these last 5 matches.
The reverse fixture between these teams resulted in a 1-1 draw at Wolverhampton. Both teams have a lot to play for, both trying to secure/maintain European qualification. If I have to compare both sides, Wolves is the drastically better team. Sheffield has had some positive results recently, beating Tottenham 3-1 last week, however, they are not on Wolves' level. Take Wolves to win this game, I think it might end 2-0 or 2-1.
