FC Famalicao is welcoming SL Benfica to Estadio Municipal de Famalicao in round 31 in the Portuguese Primeira Liga.
Famalicao has been solid since the restart with 3 wins, 2 draws, and only 1 loss, and because of that, Famalicao is only 5 points away from the Europa League, in 5th place with 48 points. Famalicao’s offense has been solid with 45 scored goals this season, while their defense has conceded 44 goals, not too good, but far from the worst. In their most recent match against Tondela on the road, Famalicao has had 56% of ball possession, 3 shots on goal, 2 corner kicks, and 84% of the correct passes. Famalicao was a slightly better team in this match and they have won this game 0-1. Martins has scored 10 goals and added 4 assists for Famalicao this season, while Martinez added 9 goals. Toni Martinez is the only injured player for Famalicao, but he should be back on the field next week. Outside the top four in Portugal, Porto, Benfica, Sporting, and Braga, Famalicao has been the best team and they absolutely deserve to be where they are. The schedule is on the easier side for Famalicao after this match, which means they could actually end up in the Europa League.
Benfica has been incredibly sloppy since the restart, and with 2 wins, 2 draws, and 2 wins from their last 6 games, Benfica has dropped to second place with 67 points, possibly uncatchable 6 points behind Porto. Benfica has scored the same amount of goals as Porto, 62 goals, but they have conceded 6 goals more, 24 in total. Vinicius has scored 17 goals for Benfica this season, while Pizzi added 16 goals and 9 assists. Grimaldo and Taarabat are injured and the season is over for them. In their last match against Boavista at home, Benfica has finally played a decent enough game. Benfica was dominant with 66% of ball possession, 9 shots on goal, 8 corner kicks, and 88% of the correct passes. Benfica has deserved a win in this match, and they did, it was 3-1. In my opinion, Benfica is the more talented team than Porto, but they are also a younger team, which is maybe why they have been so sloppy after the long break, but with another season under their belt, Benfica could be unstoppable next season. There are 4 games left in the season, and anything is possible, but I just don’t see Porto dropping points for Benfica to catchup. After the season, Benfica and Porto will clash one more time in the Portuguese cup finals, which will be another opportunity for Benfica to win a trophy.
To be honest, I’m still not convinced that Benfica’s slump is over, and Famalicao has been outstanding this season. Seeing how Benfica is struggling as of late, I will take a stab at Famalicao at home.
