Los Angeles FC and Houston Dynamo meet Monday night in the MLS is Back Tournament soccer action at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
Los Angeles FC was 1-0-1 in its first two games of the MLS season, producing a 1-0 victory over Inter Miami FC and a 3-3 draw against Philadelphia Union. Both were home games and Los Angeles FC actually has played just once outside of its own stadium since January 25, so it’s going to be interesting to see how they handle this neutral tournament. We know what Los Angeles FC is capable at both ends of the field and they should be considered one of the favorites to win this event. Carlos Vela leads Los Angeles FC with two goals, Mark-Anthony Kaye has one assist and Diego Rossi has eight shots on goal. Defensively, Kenneth Vermeer allowed three goals on 12 shots faced.
Houston Dynamo had a 1-1 draw against LA Galaxy and a 4-0 loss to Sporting Kansas City in its first two MLS matches. Houston Dynamo obviously didn’t leave off on a good note the last time we saw them, but this is still clearly a work in progress under coach Tab Ramos, and maybe the extra months off and extra preparation helps out the growing pains. However, this draw didn’t do Houston Dynamo any favors in hopes of having success in this tournament. Mauro Manotas leads Houston Dynamo with one goal, Zarek Valentin has one assist and Memo Rodriguez has one shot on goal. Defensively, Marko Maric allowed five goals on 11 shots faced.
Los Angeles FC has won each of the last three meetings against Houston Dynamo, which includes a 3-1 victory back in September. The only success Houston Dynamo has had against Los Angeles FC was a 2-2 draw back in July of 2018.
Los Angeles FC is clearly the better team in this contest with far less question marks and they should probably be considered the favorite to win the entire tournament. Houston Dynamo didn't look good its last time out and is still dealing with a new coach, and the lack of reps doesn't help them entering this new format. There's also the one-sided history that favors LAFC.
I'll lay the reasonable price with Los Angeles FC in a victory.
