Newcastle United host Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday, July 15th at St James' Park in what is going to be a very tight match. Will Tottenham keep their hopes alive for Europa League qualification, or will Newcastle spoil the day?
Newcastle United has not been in great form as of recent, coming off back to back losses. Newcastle is leaving too many gaps in their defense and they are not taking the few chances they have in matches. Newcastle most recently lost to Watford in a 2-1 defeat. Watford of course have much more to fight for than Newcastle United, who are already safe from relegation, and therefore it is not a shock to see them win that match. However, you would expect a team with no pressure on themselves like Newcastle to come out and play freely and perform well. Newcastle will need to drastically improve if they want any positive results out of these last 3 games.
Tottenham was very lucky in my opinion to come away with the victory in the North London Derby, coming back from 1-0 down to win it 2-1 after a Toby Alderweireld header. Arsenal dominated the match and it seemed as if the gunners would find the winning goal in the second half. However, Arsenal's inability to convert the many chances they had allowed Spurs to capitalize on the one chance they did have. Spurs have not been dominant in their most recent games, as we saw in the North London Derby, but they have been able to get the points.
The reverse fixture between these two sides ended in a Newcastle United 1-0 victory. Newcastle has nothing to play for, they are safe in the Premier League and cannot really go anywhere above their current position. I do not see Newcastle winning this match as they will not give it their all. Tottenham, on the other hand, are desperate to make the Europa League and they will certainly give it their all in these last 3 matches. Expect a Tottenham Hotspur victory to ensure they still have a chance of making European football.
