Atlanta United and FC Cincinnati meet Thursday morning in the MLS is Back Tournament soccer action at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
Atlanta United are coming off an upset loss to the New York Red Bulls where they couldn’t get the offense going and were shutout for the second straight game. Atlanta United controlled possession for 69.1 percent of the match and got 14 shot attempts off but couldn’t find the back of the net. It’s a frustrating loss for Atlanta United, and they haven’t scored a goal since their March 7 victory over FC Cincinnati. Ezequiel Barco leads Atlanta United with two goals, Pity Martinez has two assists and Emerson Hyndman has two shots on goal. Defensively, Brad Guzan has allowed three goals on 12 shots faced.
FC Cincinnati are another team that has nowhere to go but up after losing their opener to Columbus Crew SC, 4-0. FC Cincinnati has now been on the losing side in each of their last three games and have been outscored 6-1 in their last two efforts. In their latest effort, FC Cincinnati allowed 13 shot attempts, six of which were on target and controlled the ball for just 37.9 percent of the match. FC Cincinnati are going to be hard pressed to play any worse than they did their last time on the pitch. Yuya Kubo leads FC Cincinnati with one goal, Brandon Vazquez has one assist and Jurgen Locadia has four shots on goal. Defensively, Spencer Richey has allowed five goals on 10 shots faced and Przemyslaw Tyton has given up four goals on six shots.
Atlanta United are 2-0-1 in three meetings against FC Cincinnati, which includes outscoring them 4-1 in the last two meetings. The only positive result for FC Cincinnati was a 1-1 draw in March of 2019.
Atlanta United is a much better team than what it showed in its last contest and they still had their chances to get the job done with so much ball control and shot attempts. I expect Atlanta United to iron some things out and find the back of the net in this contest. I can't say the same for FC Cincinnati, a team that's been badly outplayed in its last three games and one of those meetings coming against this very Atlanta team.
You can argue this price should be even steeper than what it is. Give me Atlanta United in a victory.
