The Philadelphia Union and the New England Revolution meet in a round of 16 match in soccer action as part of the MLS is Back tournament on Saturday.
The Philadelphia Union earned their spot in the knockout round after finishing tied for tops in group A, finishing with a 2-1-0 record after a 1-1 draw with Orlando City in their last group stage match. In the draw with Orlando, The first half was squeaky clean with no bookings and no scoring, but Philly would break the deadlock thanks to Ilson’s goal in the 68th minute but the Lions would be quick to respond, tying the game at one goal apiece just two minutes later. Orlando City had the bulk of the opportunities in the second half, holding the Union to just 42% possession, but in the end the two sides were already through so a point was fine across the board for both sides.
The New England Revolution booked their ticket to the knockout rounds after finishing tied at the top of group C with a 1-2-0 record after a scoreless draw with Toronto FC last time out. In the draw with TFC, the first half saw a pair of yellow cards brandished New England’s way, and while New England owned 54% possession in the second half with four shots on goal, neither side would find the goal to break through and take the lead so the points would be shared at the full time whistle as both sides held onto their clean sheet.
This is a tight match and you can definitely make a case that the Revolution had a tougher road to the knockout round, so maybe that’ll help them here. However, the Union have owned the Revolution for some time now, going unbeaten in the last five head-to-head with the Revs with four wins and a draw and unbeaten in 9 of the last 10 against New England with 7 wins as well. Philadelphia looked pretty good themselves in the group stage and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them blow past New England again here so I’ll side with Philadelphia on the ML.
