Southampton host Sheffield United on the last day of the 2019/20 Premier League season at St. Mary's Stadium. Neither team has much to play for and I expect this to be a very fun and open match.
Southampton are coming off a 2-0 victory against Bournemouth, which has basically ensured Bournemouth's relegation. Southampton had 59% possession and had an incredible 9 shots on target. They took the match to Bournemouth, and after going 1-0 up in the 41st minute, they were able to defend very well to ensure their victory, eventually securing the insurance goal in the 90+9th minute. Southampton are 12th in the league and have nothing to play for, and this has already shown us that they are playing freely and without pressure. Will the saints do the same on Sunday against Sheffield United?
Sheffield United are coming off a 1-0 loss to Everton in what was a must-win match for Sheffield United. Sheffield had the better chances, had the better control of the game, but one free-kick and goal by Richarlison allowed for a Everton victory. Now, Sheffield United cannot make the Europa League and they have nothing to play for. Sheffield United let the pressure get to them, and although they have had an incredible season in the Premier League, they will be disappointed with their last couple performances.
The reverse fixture between these two sides ended in a 1-0 Southampton victory. Southampton opened the scoring in the 66th minute and Sheffield United did not manage to get back in the game. It was an incredibly tight match, however, with the possession being 52% for Southampton. Southampton has 10 shots, 7 of which were on target, whilst Sheffield United has 12 shots, 4 of which were on target. As neither of these teams have much to play for anymore, and they are going to be playing without pressure and freely, I expect a very fun match. I expect both teams will score and put on solid performances, but it is hard to predict who will be better. Neither of these teams will be disappointed with a draw in my opinion.
