Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique Lyonnais are clashing at Stade de France in the finals of the Coupe de la Ligue.
PSG has played 4 games in July, and they have won all 4 without conceding a goal while scoring 21 goals. Most recently, PSG has played a game in the Coupe de France finals against Saint-Etienne, and PSG has won this match 1-0, even though it should have been a lot higher score than this. PSG has had 59% of ball possession, 8 shots on goal, 8 corner kicks, 5 big chances created, and solid 82% of the correct passes. The only goal in the match was scored by Neymar in the 14th minute of the game. This wasn’t the usually good game for PSG, despite having an extra player since the 31st minute of the game. The biggest problem for PSG at the moment is the injury of Mbappe, but he will probably be ready for PSG’s Champions League game against Atalanta next weekend. PSG is the best team in France, and how could they not be when the rich people from Emirates pumped all that money into the team, but what PSG desires is the Champions League, which still away from their reach. PSG is in a good form, and maybe this special format of the Champions League will go in their favor.
Lyon is also in a good form, and from the 5 friendly games they played so far, Lyon has won 4 and lost 1 game. During this stretch, Lyon has scored 9 goals, while conceding 7 goals, but these were all friendly games and the lineups were mixed. Since the French Ligue 1 season was canceled after the Covid-19 hit us, Lyon ended the season in 7th place in the standings with 40 points, 42 scored goals, and only 27 conceded goals. The good news for Lyon is that they are still playing in the Champions League next week, where they will face Juventus in the second leg of Round of 16. In the first leg of this matchup, Lyon has beaten Juventus 1-0 at home, and with Juventus not being at their best, Lyon might actually have a shot of advancing to the next stage. Lyon has some great players like Depay, Dembele, Traore, and Mendes in their roster, but we will see if that will be enough to knock out Juventus. Before PSG became what they are today, Lyon was the dominant force in France, but without the amount of money PSG has, Lyon is slowly dropping in quality, and they are less and less competitive in French Ligue 1.
The trends in this matchup are pretty evenly split, and I think that Lyon could surprise PSG here. I’m confident that PSG will score at least one goal here because they have way too many threats in the attacking end, but Lyon is a solid team that will have a say in this final game of the Coupe de la Ligue.
