Shakhtar Donetsk is hosting Wolfsburg in the second leg of Round of 16 in the UEFA Europa League.
Shakhtar is probably the best team in Ukraine, and they have been playing outstanding soccer after the restart. Shakhtar has 7 wins and 2 draws in the Ukrainian Premier League, and they have won the title with 82 points, 23 points ahead of Dynamo Kyiv. Shakhtar has been the best team on both ends this season. In the attacking end, Shakhtar has scored massive 80 goals in 32 games, while conceding only 26 goals. Alan has scored 2 goals for Shakhtar in the Europa League this season, while Marlos, Taison, and Moraes added 1 assist each. Malyshev, Ismaily, Vakula, and Tankovskyi are all injured, and they will not be playing again this season. In their last Premier League game against Oleksandria on the road, Shakhtar was the dominant team with 64% of ball possession, 7 shots on goal, and 5 corner kicks, but they weren’t able to win this match, and it ended in a 2-2 draw, not that it mattered. At the beginning of the season, Shakhtar was playing in the Champions League, but they ended in third place in the group stage, which led them into the Europa League. In the first knockout round, Shakhtar has beaten Benfica. Shakhtar is a good team, but their season has ended over two weeks ago, and I just hope that they were able to stay in the competitive form since then.
Wolfsburg was struggling since the restart, and they had more bad than good games in Bundesliga, but they ended in 7th place which qualified Wolfsburg for the Europa League next season as well. In their last competitive game in Bundesliga, Wolfsburg was playing against Bayern at home, and they had only 38% of ball possession in that game, 4 shots on goal, 3 corner kicks, and 78% of the correct passes. Wolfsburg has lost this match 0-4. In the Europa League, Wolfsburg has been great, and they ended the group stage in second place with 11 points, 9 scored goals, and 7 conceded goals. In the first round of knockouts, Wolfsburg has beaten Swedish team Malmo 2-1, and 0-3. Joao has scored 3 goals for Wolfsburg in the Europa League, while Brekalo added another 3 goals and 3 assists. Camacho, William, Otavio, and Mbabu are all injured. Wolfsburg has so much potential, and they could do so much more, and hopefully, they will in the Europa League if they haven’t in Bundesliga.
Shakhtar has won the first leg of this matchup 1-2, which means Wolfsburg has to score at least 2 goals to advance to the next stage. I know that Wolfsburg has a lot of offensive firepowers, but Bundesliga ended a while ago, and the question is if it was good for Wolfsburg to not play any games since then. I think this could be a fun and exciting game where we could see a lot of goals.
