Wolverhampton and Sevilla are clashing at MSV-Arena in Germany in the Europa League Quarterfinals.
Wolverhampton did solid in the EPL where they ended the season in 7th place, outside the Europa League zone, which means Wolverhampton will play in the Champions League or the Europa League next season only if they win the Europa League this season. In the second leg game in their matchup against Greek champion Olympiacos, Wolverhampton has had only 35% of ball possession, 4 shots on goal, 7 corner kicks, 3 big chances created, and 71% of accurate passes. This was an incredibly important and hard game for Wolverhampton, one they were not allowed to lose, and they didn’t. Wolverhampton has won this match 1-0. There are no injuries or suspensions in Wolverhampton at this time, but Saiss, Neves, Otto, and Jota are all at risk of suspensions if they conceded another yellow card. Jota is Wolverhampton’s leading goal scorer with 6 goals in the Europa League, while Jimenez added 4 goals. Jimenez and Moutinho both have 3 assists. Wolverhampton is a well-balanced team, and they can play offensively, as well as defensively, which we saw against Olympiacos. They could have gotten a better matchup in the Europa League, but they are more than good enough to beat anyone if Wolverhampton is on their best level.
Every time I think Sevilla is about to lose, they go on and surprise me with some of their best soccer, and it was the same against Roma in the Round of 16 in the Europa League. Sevilla was dominant in that match with 56% of ball possession, 7 shots on goal, 10 corner kicks, 4 big chances created, and solid 84% of the correct passes. With two goals in the first half, and an excellent defending and goalkeeping in the second half, Sevilla has won this match 2-0, and since it was a 1-game knockout, Sevilla has advanced to the Quarterfinals. Sevilla isn’t overly effective in the attacking end this season, and they have scored only 54 goals in LaLiga season, but their defense has been impressive with only 34 conceded goals, and they were even better in the Europa League with 14 scored goals, and only 3 conceded goals. El Haddadi has scored 5 goals for Sevilla in the Europa League, while Dabbur added 3 goals, and En-Nesyri Vazquez have both added 2 goals. Banega and Dabbur both have 2 assists. There are no injuries in Sevilla, while Navas, Gomez, and Gil are all in danger of suspensions. Sevilla is a fantastic team, and their coach is doing a fantastic job, but I think this will be a big test for them, and I hope Sevilla is up for it, after all, they have won this competition 3 times in the last 5 years.
Wolverhampton and Sevilla have never played against each other, but I would give them equal chances of advancing to the semifinals. I don’t like to play under on goals in soccer, but this could easily end in a 0-0 draw, or even go to the penalty shootout, and for that reason, I will take a stab at a draw here.
