Manchester City and Olympique Lyonnais are playing in the Champions League Quarterfinals at Jose Alvalade.
Manchester City has been playing fantastic soccer despite not having their star striker Sergio Aguero. Putting the EPL aside, Manchester City has been one of the best teams in Europe for a while now, but Liverpool was just too strong in the EPL this season for City to defend the title, but in the Champions League, City has been fantastic. In the group stage, City has won first place, while knocking out Real Madrid in the Round of 16 with 2 nice wins. In their second leg game against Real Madrid just a few days ago, Manchester City was dominant with 55% of ball possession, 7 shots on goal, 7 corner kicks, 3 big chances created, and solid 87% of accurate passes. With 1 goal in each half, Manchester City has won this match 2-1, and with that, they advanced to the quarterfinals. Jesus and Sterling have each scored 6 goals for Manchester City in the Champions League this season, while Mahrez added 4 assists. Aguero, Porro, Steffen, and Sandler are all injured, and will not be in the lineup for this match. Pep Guardiola is City’s coach, and we know what kind of soccer he likes, high possession, strictly tactical and patient soccer, and it is working for them. I truly believe that City could finally win the Champions League this season, especially because it’s being played on only 1-game knockout.
To me, Lyon is the biggest surprise in the Champions League quarterfinals. After winning the first leg of Round of 16 against Juventus 1-0, Lyon has lost the second leg 2-1, but they still advanced to the Quarterfinals thanks to the away goal. Lyon was defending for the entire game against Juventus, and they have had only 38% of ball possession, 2 shots on goal, 3 corner kicks, and low 78% of the correct passes. Thanks to the penalty kick in the 12th minute, which Lyon turned into a goal, Lyon is not in this matchup against Manchester City. Since the French Ligue 1 has been canceled after the pandemic, Lyon ended the last season in 7th place, close to the Europa League, but they will not be playing in it unless they win the Champions League this season. There are no injuries or suspensions in Lyon, but Marcelo is in danger of getting suspended if he concedes another yellow card. Depay has been Lyon’s best player in the Champions League this season with 6 goals, and when he plays, Lyon plays. Aouar has added 3 assists for Lyon in the Champions League. Lyon has played 5 friendly games before the Champions League restart, and they have won 4, but they also lost in the Coupe de la Ligue match against PSG in the penalty shootout 2 weeks ago. I can’t say that Lyon is in a good form, and they were lucky to get into the Quarterfinals, but anything can happen in soccer.
I think this will be a one-way game where Manchester City will dominate from start until finish and score a few goals along the way. Lyons is a good team, but not good enough to stop Manchester City.
