Dijon is hosting Angers at Stade Gaston Gerard in round 1 in French Ligue 1.
Dijon was doing well in Ligue 1 last season, and they were outside the relegation zone, in 16th place with 30 points, and since the season was canceled, that is where Dijon ended the season. They weren’t to effective last season, and Dijon has scored only 27 goals in 28 games while conceding 37 goals. In four friendly game Dijon has played in the preseason, they have only 1 win, 1 draw, and 2 losses. During this stretch, Dijon has conceded and scored 3 goals. I think it’s safe to say that Dijon’s form is not good, but those were all friendly games and the lineups were mixed. There are no injuries or suspensions in Dijon as of right now. The biggest arrival to Dijon is Alex Dobre from Bournemouth for 1 million Euros. Nayef Aguerd has left the club to Stade Rennais in a transfer worth 5 million Euros. There are some solid players in Dijon, but not nearly enough to make a bigger impact in Ligue 1. I don’t expect much from Dijon this season, somewhere around the relegation zone will be where Dijon will stay for most of the season.
Angers was fantastic last season, and they were getting really close to the Europa League. With 39 points, 28 scored goals, and 33 conceded goals, Angers has ended the last season in 10th place, just 2 points away from the Europa League, and maybe they would have got it, maybe they wouldn’t, but we know that they will not be playing in the Europa League this season. There are no injuries or suspensions in Angers right now. Angers were active during the transfer window and they bought Bernardoni from Bordeaux for 7.5 million Euros, Doumbia from Stade Rennais for 3 million Euros, and a few more players that will give them enough depth. The only notable departure was Pajot who left for FC Metz. The preseason was solid for Angers, and of the seven games they played, Angers has won 3, 2 ended in a draw, while they lost 2 games. It’s certainly better to have a good preseason than to lose all the friendly games, but we can never know how the team will react to the first competitive game of the season. Playing the first game of the season on the road doesn’t help, but Angers has had a decent last season, and they will look to continue doing a good job. I expect Angers to be somewhere in the middle of the standings this season.
The trends are on Anger’s side in this matchup, and they have had plenty of success against Dijon on the road. In a lot of games between Dijon and Angers we see a lot of goals, and this being the first competitive game of the season for both teams means that the defenses are not yet tuned in properly. I will take a shot with goals here.
