Lille OSC is welcoming Stade Rennais to Stade Pierre Mauroy in round 1 of French Ligue 1.
Lille has 2 wins and 3 losses in the preseason, but they have been playing some solid teams like Alkmaar and Club Brugge. During their five preseason games, Lille has scored 6 goals while conceding 7 goals. Lille ended last season in 4th place with 49 points, just 1 point away from the Champions League, but they will still be playing in the Europa League this season. With only 27 conceded goals last season, Lille was one of the best defensive teams in Ligue 1, while their 35 scored goals were decent enough. Timothy Weah is the only injured player for Lille, and unfortunately for him, he will miss the beginning of the season. Lille has lost one of their best players in a transfer worth 70 million Euros, Victor Osimhen has been sold to Napoli. The biggest signing for Lille is Jonathan David, a Canadian star who was bought from Gent where he had a fantastic season for 32 million Euros. Lille is a good team with some fantastic players like Sanches, Bradaric, Remy, and Yilmaz, which in my opinion will be enough for one of the top 6 spots in Ligue 1. The transfer window is still open, and Lille can bring in some more reinforcements, but even their current lineup will be trouble for some of the biggest clubs in the league.
Rennais has been playing well in the preseason, and they have 4 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss. During this stretch, Rennais has scored 12 goals, and they scored in each of those games while conceding only 4 goals. Surprisingly, Rennais has ended the last season in fantastic third place with 50 points, and they will be playing in the Champions League qualifications this season. Rennais’ offense was solid with 38 scored goals, but their defense was just brilliant with only 24 conceded goals. There are no injuries or suspensions in Rennais as of right now. The only notable exit from the club was Doumbia who left for Angers, while Rennais signed Terrier from Lyon for 12 million Euros and Aguerd from Dijon for 5 million Euros. Rennais being in third place was quite surprising to me despite players lie Niang and N’Zonzi being on the team, but Rennais is a great collective and they always give their best, and the defense is the main part of their game. It’s still unknown who Rennais will play in the Champions League qualifications, but as far as the Ligue 1 goes, I don’t think Rennais can repeat the last season.
During the last 26 games when Lilla was playing at home against Rennais, Lille has won 16 games, 9 have ended in a draw, while Rennais has won only 1 game. Both Lille and Rennais are great teams, and even though I’m giving a slight advantage to Lille at home, I will pick something on goals here.
