Portugal is welcoming Croatia to Estadio do Dragao in round 1 in the UEFA Nations League.
Portugal is the winner of the first Nations League last year when they beat the Netherlands in the finals 1-0. In the Euro Cup qualifications, Portugal ended in second place with 17 points, 22 scored goals, and 6 conceded goals. Portugal is playing in the extremely tough group in the Euro Cup, in Group F with France and Germany, while the fourth competitor will be determined. In their last match against Luxembourg on the road, Portugal has had 62% of ball possession, 4 shots on goal, 5 corner kicks, 2 big chances created, and 84% of the correct passes. Portugal has won this match 0-2. Portugal is led by Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the best players in the history of this game, but there has been news of a small injury and he is questionable for this game. Renato Sanches is also questionable. Even without these two players, Portugal has a lot of talent left with Felix, Silva, Jota, Fernandes, Silva, Semedo, Neves, and Guerreiro. The only problem I see for Portugal is their defense which is getting slower and slower with Pepe and Fonte who are both closer to their forties than thirties. Nonetheless, Portugal is a good team that can beat anyone who comes in front of them, and they proved that when they won the last Euro Cup.
Croatia has won their Group E in the Euro Cup qualifications with 17 points, 17 scored goals, and 7 conceded goals. In the Euro Cup next year, Croatia will be playing in Group D with England, Czech Republic, while the fourth team is still unknown. In their latest match against Slovakia at home, Croatia was dominant with 66% of ball possession, 13 shots on goal, 15 corner kicks, 4 big chances created, and high 91% of the correct passes. This was the game where Croatia needed a win, and it was easily the best game of the entire qualifications for Croatia. After losing at the half time, Croatia has turned the game around and has won this match 3-1. The Croatian offense will be the best they have with Rebic, Kramaric, and Petkovic, while the Croatian midfield will be without Modric and Rakitic in this game, but Kovacic, Pasalic, Vlasic, Brozovic, and the most recent Champions League winner Perisic are all ready to play. The defense will be led by Lovren and Vida who are playing well together, while Jedvaj and Caleta-Car will be the backup. Croatia is in 6th place in the FIFA standings, and after their success in the World Cup in 2018, Croatia is not one of the main favorites to win the Euro cup next year, but they are close to the top, and they will be tough to beat.
Croatia has never beaten Portugal before, and both teams will be without some of their most important players. Both Portugal and Croatia can score goals and play good soccer, which is why I will pick something on goals here.
