Southampton and Crystal Palace kick off their season on Saturday, September 12th at Selhurst Park Stadium in London for English Premier League action. Crystal Palace hasn’t beaten Southampton since January of 2018.
Southampton finished last season in 11th place in the English Premier League standings and the COVID-19 pause of the season actually did them a lot of good. After the restart, Southampton finished with five wins, three draws, and one loss. Included in those wins were games over Manchester United and Manchester City. The star of the show for Southampton is Danny Ings who finished last season scoring 22 goals. The team has also brought in Kyle Walker-Peters and Mohamed Salisu who should make this team better.
On the other side of this matchup is Crystal Palace who finished 14th in the Premier League standings, but they were the opposite, really struggling after the restart. Crystal Palace had lost seven games in a row before playing to a draw with Tottenham in the last game. On paper, this Crystal Palace team looks a lot better than they were last season. Eberechi Eze is an attacking midfielder who was brought in to be a game changer for this team. Eze looks to be fully healed from a groin injury, but it’s unclear if he will be starting in this game. One of the big problems for Crystal Palace last season was with their offense and they need to take a more attacking stance in this game.
One key to this game could be the fitness for both teams. Crystal Palace has had four exhibition games heading into this one, while Southampton has only had one game.
If both teams had played an equal number of preseason games, Southampton is the better team, but I don’t think they are going to be up to form in this game. As long as Eze goes in this game, he is going to find the back of the net, and Crystal Palace will get the job done. Back Crystal Palace on the money line. In terms of the total it's a lean to the under, but the price is a bit high.
