Bayern Munich is welcoming FC Schalke 04 to Allianz Arena on the opening day of the new Bundesliga Season.
Bayern is the best team in Germany, and one of the best teams in Europe, and the last game Bayern has lost was back in January of this year, talk about the long streak. Bayern was brilliant in the Champions League, which they won without a loss and with over 40 scored goals. Bayern has beaten PSG in the Champions League finals. Nianzou and Coman are both injured for Bayern, and they will miss the beginning of the new season. The most notable arrival to Bayern is Sane from Manchester City for 49.5 million Euros, while the most notable departures are Perisic and Coutinho. Bayern has won the title in Bundesliga last season, and they were dominant while doing it. The transfer window is still open, and I think we can expect a few more departures from Bayern, and probably some more arrivals, but even with this roster, Bayern is once again the best team in Germany. The latest rumor is that Thiago will be leaving Bayern for Liverpool, while Alaba is hesitant to sign a new contract because he wants a massive salary increase. Bayern has absolutely deserved to win the Champions League last season because they played the best soccer overall, but we will see if that will continue this season.
Schalke has ended last season in 12th place with 39 points, and they were far away from the relegation zone, but still far away from the Europa League. Schalke has been hot and cold in the preseason with 3 wins and 2 losses, 14 scored goals, and 9 conceded goals. Schalke has lost a few important players in the offseason, players like Todibo, Miranda, Caliguri, and McKennie, while they signed Paciencia, Ibisevic, and Uth to their roster. Mascarell and Sane are both injured, while Bentaleb is on special leave. Schalke has been far away from the top for years now, and honestly, there are no signs of improvement despite Schalke being a good team with a solid amount of talent. Schalke has signed David Wagner as their head coach in July of last year, and since Schalke has had 12 wins, 12 draws, and 14 losses. I don’t think Schalke has a chance of getting to the Europa League this season as well, and this will be a hard season for them once again. Schalke shouldn’t have a problem with securing their Bundesliga status, but I don’t see them much higher than 10th place.
When playing at home, Bayern has not lost to Schalke in their last 11 games, and the trends are heavily on Bayern’s side in this matchup. Schalke hasn’t won any of their last 8 games against Bayern Munich. Despite not playing any of the friendly games in the preseason, Bayern is still in a good competitive rhythm because they have been playing in the Champions League. I will side with Bayern here because Schalke is just a bad team.
