Werder Bremen is welcoming Hertha BSC to Weserstadion in round 1 in German Bundesliga.

Werder has barely escaped the relegation last season, and I mean barely. Werder ended the season in 16th place with 31 points, which was enough for the relegation playoffs where Werder was facing Heidenheim. The first leg ended in a 0-0 draw, while the second leg ended in a 2-2 draw, and because Werder scored 2 goals on the road, they have won this matchup, and with that, Werder has stayed in Bundesliga. In the preseason, Werder was outstanding with 5 wins, 16 scored goals, and only 3 conceded goals. In the DFB Pokal match against Carl Zeiss Jena on the road, Werder was the dominant team with 62% of ball possession, 5 shots on goal, 9 corner kicks, 2 big chances created, and 80% of the correct passes. Werder has won this match 0-2. Bittencourt and Toprak are the biggest signings for Werder in the offseason, while Sahin and Bartels left the club in free transfers. Rashica, Toprak, and Schonfelder are all injured, and they will not be in the lineup for this match. Werder was a disastrous last season, and it’s hard to imagine that kind of season will happen again to the former Bundesliga Champion. Judging by the preseason, Werder should be a lot better, but the season will be long and exhausting, and we are yet to see if Werder can handle Bundesliga’s top teams.

Hertha has ended the last season in the middle of the table, in 10th place with 41 points, 48 scored goals, and 59 conceded goals. The preseason was tough for Hertha, and they have lost 3 of their 4 friendly games. During this stretch, Hertha has scored only 2 goals, and that was in their win against Viktoria Koln. In the DFB Pokal match, Hertha was playing against Eintracht Braunschweig on the road, and Hertha was the better team with 66% of ball possession, 7 shots on goal, 10 corner kicks, 2 big chances created, and a solid 86% of the correct passes. This was a fantastic match where we saw 9 goals, 1 missed penalty kick, and plenty more chances. Hertha has lost this match 5-4, and they got knocked out of the competition. Lukebakio is the best player in Hertha, and fortunately for them, he stayed at the club, at least for now. There are no injuries or suspensions in Hertha as of right now. Cordoba, Schwolow, and Zeefuik are the biggest signings for Hertha in the offseason, while Duda left for Koln. Hertha is a good team, and I don’t think they will have any problems in securing their Bundesliga status, but I don’t see them any higher than 8th place.

The trends are on Werder’s side in this matchup, and Werder is in much better form at the moment. When playing at home, Werder has not lost to Hertha in their last 12 games, while Hertha hasn’t won any of their last 7 away games. I will side with Werder at home in the first game of the season because they are in far better form than Hertha.
