Hungary is welcoming Iceland to Ferenc Puskas Stadium in the final game of the Euro Cup Qualification playoffs.
Hungary is playing well as of late, and they have lost only 1 of their last 5 games. During this 5-game stretch, Hungary has scored 7 goals while conceding 4 goals. Hungary has played some good teams during this stretch, and they were able to hold their own against each of them. In their last match against Russia in the Nations League, Hungary has had 43% of ball possession, 0 shots on goal, 1 corner kick, 1 big chance created, and 70% of the correct passes. It was a decent game for Hungary, and this game ended in a 0-0 draw. Hungary has defeated Bulgaria in their semifinals game in these playoffs, and that was a fantastic game for them. Orban is the leading goalscorer for Hungary in these qualifications with 6 goals, while Nikolic and Kalmar added 4 goals each. There are plenty of good players in the Hungarian roster, and coach Marco Rossi is doing a fantastic job with this team, and to qualify for the Euro Cup would certainly be the icing on the cake for this team.
Iceland is struggling massively, on both ends, and they have lost 4 of their last 5 games. The only win for Iceland came against Romania in the semifinals of these playoffs. Iceland has lost all 4 of their Nations League games, and they have conceded 11 goals during this stretch while scoring only 2 goals. Sigurdsson is the leading goalscorer for Iceland in these qualifications with 10 goals. In their latest Nations League game against Belgium at home, Iceland has had only 32% of ball possession, 2 shots on goal, 6 corner kicks, 1 big chance created, and a solid 80% of the correct passes. Iceland conceded a goal in the 9th minute, but they were able to get back in the 17th minute. Iceland has conceded another goal in the 38th minute from the penalty spot, and they ended up losing this match 1-2. Iceland is coming into this game with their strongest lineup, and Hungary is the team Iceland could beat, but I’m just not sure Iceland has what it takes in the attacking end to create enough chances and to score goals. It’s clear that Iceland has potential, but they are constantly playing defensive soccer, and it’s costing them a lot.
When playing at home, Hungary has won all three of their games against Iceland, but all those games were a long time ago. Honestly, this game could go either way, but I think Hungary is the better team, and they are playing better soccer on both ends. I’m taking Hungary to qualify for the Euro Cup.
