Hertha BSC is hosting Borussia Dortmund at Olympiastadion in round 8 in the German Bundesliga.
Hertha is playing bad soccer with a few blitzes of something good this season. With only 7 points, 13 scored goals, and 13 conceded goals, Hertha is in 12th place in the Bundesliga standings. Hertha has lost 4 of their last 7 games, and they have conceded at least 1 goal in 6 of those 7 games. Hertha was playing against Augsburg on the road in their last Bundesliga game, and they were the better team in that match with 53% of ball possession, 5 shots on goal, 6 corner kicks, 3 big chances created, and a decent 82% of the correct passes. Hertha has deservedly won this match 0-3. With 4 goals, Cunha is the leading goalscorer for Hertha, while Cordoba has added 3 goals. Mittelstadt, Cunha, Darida, and Lukebakio have each added 2 assists so far this season. Torunarigha and Cordoba are both injured, and they will miss this game. There are some good signs in Hertha’s game, but they are playing wildly inconsistent soccer, and for that reason, I don’t think we will see Hertha anywhere near the Europa League, but they shouldn’t have a problem staying outside the relegation zone.
Borussia has been playing great soccer this season, and they were on a 4-game winning streak without a conceded goal, until they played against Bayern in their last Bundesliga game. Borussia was a slightly better team in that game with 51% of ball possession, 5 shots on goal, 4 corner kicks, 4 big chances created, and a decent 80% of the correct passes. Borussia got ahead in the 45th minute from a beautiful play, but just 2 minutes later, Bayern tied the score from an even more beautiful free-kick from Alaba. We saw 3 more goals in the second half, and Borussia has lost this match 2-3 at home. Defensively, Borussia has been one of the best teams in Bundesliga this season with 5 conceded goals, while scoring 15 goals. Borussia Dortmund is now in 3rd place with 15 points, 3 points less than Bayern at the top. In the Champions League, Borussia is at the top of their group with 6 points, and they are playing against Club Brugge at home next week. Haaland has scored 6 goals for Borussia Dortmund so far this season, while Hummels added 3 goals. Sancho has 4 assists, while Guerreiro and Reyna have 3 assists each. Schmelzer is the only injured player for Borussia Dortmund as of right now. Borussia is playing well, but they need a bigger input from Sancho, and once he starts playing more consistently, so will Borussia.
Hertha hasn’t won any of their last 3 games against Borussia Dortmund, and they still haven’t won a game at home this season. I know that Borussia is playing in the Champions League next season, but Hertha is in terrible form, and for that reason, I can’t side with Hertha.
