Borussia M’gladbach is welcoming Shakhtar Donetsk to Borussia-Park in round 4 in the UEFA Champions League.
Borussia hasn’t won any of their last 2 games in Bundesliga, but they are still unbeaten in the Champions League, which is surprising considering the team that is in their group. In their last match against Augsburg at home, Borussia has had 52% of ball possession, 6 shots on goal, 2 corner kicks, 5 big chances created, and a decent 83% of the correct passes. After scoring a goal in the 5th minute, Borussia was dominant, and they even had an extra player since the 66th minute. Unfortunately for Borussia, they conceded a goal in the 88th minute, and this match ended in a 1-1 draw. M’gladbach is actually at the top of their group in the Champions League with 5 points, a massive 10 scored goals, and 4 conceded goals. Borussia has been the best team on both ends in their group so far, and they have a good chance to keep it that way. Plea is the leading goalscorer for M’gladbach with 3 goals, while Bensebaini and Thuram have each added 2 goals. Even though M’gladbach is struggling a bit in Bundesliga, they are doing a fantastic job in the Champions League, and they deserve to advance past the group stage.
Shakhtar is in second place in their Champions League group, and their only loss was to Borussia M’gladbach before the international break. Shakhtar was demolished 0-6 at home in that game. This was the only loss for Shakhtar since late August, but they are struggling defensively this season. In their last game, Shakhtar was hosting Oleksandria, and they were the better team in that match with 60% of ball possession, 3 shots on goal, and 7 corner kicks. This game ended in a 1-1 draw. Shakhtar is in second place in the Ukrainian Premier League, but just 3 points behind Dynamo Kyiv. Tete and Solomon have each scored 1 goal for Shakhtar so far in the Champions League. Malyshev, Ismaily, Konoplyanka, Kornienko, and Taison are all injured, and they will miss this match for Shakhtar. They might be in second place at the moment, but I don’t see Shakhtar staying there, or even to qualify for the Europa League. Shakhtar is one of the best teams in Ukraine, but they have defensive problems this season, a lot of injuries, and they are inconsistent in the attacking end.
As I’ve mentioned before, Borussia M’gladbach has demolished Shakhtar on the road, and they will look to continue their good Champions League form at home. I know we can’t just write Shakhtar out, but with all the injures, and the fact that they are playing on the road doesn’t give me any confidence in this team. I’m taking Borussia M’gladbach at home.
