Zenit St. Petersburg is welcoming Borussia Dortmund to Gazprom Arena in round 6 in the UEFA Champions League.
After 4 games without a win, Zenit has finally got back on the winning track. This past weekend, Zenit was hosting Ural in the Russian Premier League, and they were the better team with 53% of ball possession, 13 shots on goal, 6 corner kicks, 10 big chances created, and a solid 89% of the correct passes. Zenit has had a fantastic game in this match, and they have won 5-1. In the Champions League, Zenit has only 1 point, and they are in the last place without a chance to reach third place and the Europa League. Zenit was playing against Club Brugge on the road last week, and they have lost this match 3-0. Dzyuba and Yerokhin have each scored 1 goal for Zenit so far in the Champions League. Lovren is the only injured player for Zenit at this time. This certainly was a disappointing Champions League season, but they are doing well in the Russian Premier League, and that is what they must focus on from now on.
Borussia is in first place in their Champions League group, and they are the safe traveler to the next stage of this competition. Borussia has scored 10 goals so far in the Champions League while conceding only 4 goals so far. Borussia is without a win in their last 3 games, while their last 2 games ended in a 1-1 draw. In their last Champions League game, Borussia was hosting Lazio, and they have had 56% of ball possession, 4 shots on goal, 1 corner kick, 2 big chances created, and high 90% of the correct passes. After getting ahead in the 44th minute, Borussia conceded a penalty kick in the 67th minute, and Lazio tied the score. We didn’t see any more goals in this game, and it ended in a 1-1 draw. Haaland has scored 6 goals for Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League so far, while Sancho added 2 goals and 1 assist. Schmelzer, Meunier, Haaland, Reinier, Delaney, Guerreiro, Akanji, Bauza, and Dahoud are all injured for Borussia Dortmund, and they will most likely miss this game. Borussia is now in 4th place in the Bundesliga standings with 19 points, but they are struggling a little bit at the moment. Borussia has a lot of injuries, and luckily for them, they don’t need anything here, but it would have been nice to end the group stage with a win.
In each of the three games, Zenit and Borussia have played we saw at least 3 goals. Borussia has won 2 games against Zenit, while Zenit won 1 game. Neither of these two teams can gain anything with a win here, but Borussia can lose their top spot if they lose this game, which is why I will side with Borussia on the road.
