Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao are playing in the second semifinals game of the Spanish Super Cup at La Rosaleda.
Real was on a fantastic 6-game winning streak, but that streak got broken with a draw against Elche. In their last 3 games in LaLiga, Real has 2 draws and one win, and they have scored only 3 goals. Real Madrid is still in second place in the LaLiga standings with 37 points, 4 points less than Atletico Madrid, but they also have 2 games more. In their latest LaLiga game, Real Madrid was playing against Osasuna on the road, and they were the better team with 71% of ball possession, 1 shot on goal, 4 corner kicks, 0 big chances created, and a solid 89% of the correct passes. Even though Real was dominant in this game, they weren’t able to score a goal, and this game has ended in a 0-0 draw. Rodrygo and Carvajal are injured for Real Madrid, while Jovic is being lent to Eintracht for the rest of the season. the biggest question in Real Madrid now is if they will extend contracts to Ramos and Modric, but if they don’t, the interest is huge for them all over Europe.
Bilbao has shown some signs of life as of late, but their form is still bad. Athletic Bilbao has won only 1 of their last 4 games, and they are closer to the relegation zone than the Europa League spot. Athletic is struggling on both ends, and they have scored only 21 goals in LaLiga while conceding 22 goals. In their last LaLiga game, Bilbao was playing against Barcelona last week, and they have had 42% of ball possession, 3 shots on goal, 3 corner kicks, 0 big chances created, and a decent 85% of the correct passes. Bilbao got ahead in the 3rd minute, but Barcelona turned things around by halftime. Bilbao conceded one more goal in the second half, but they were also able to score a goal in the 90th minute. Athletic Bilbao has lost this game 2-3. Bilbao has had plenty of time to rest because their LaLiga game this past weekend was postponed. Nolaskoain is the only injured player for Bilbao at this time. The first trophy of the season is on the line in this game, and because these semifinals are being played on only one game, Bilbao will need to be at the top of their game if they want to advance against Real Madrid.
The trends are heavily on Real Madrid’s side in this matchup, and Real hasn’t lost any of their last 9 games. Bilbao’s last win against Real Madrid was back in 2005, and Real has been dominant at home. With this being a very important game, I expect Bilbao to step up, and at least get a draw here, and then what happens, happens in the overtime. I will take the draw here.
