Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao are clashing at Estadio de la Cartuja in the Spanish Super Cup finals.
Barcelona has extended their unbeaten streak to 9 games, and they have beaten Real Sociedad in the Super Cup semifinals after the penalty shootout earlier this week. Barcelona was without Messi in that game, but he should be ready for this match, and for Barcelona’s first chance to win a trophy this season. Barcelona is also getting closer to the top in LaLiga, and they are now in 3rd place with 34 points. In their game against Real Sociedad earlier this week, Barcelona has had 63% of ball possession, 5 shots on goal, 3 corner kicks, 2 big chances created, and a solid 88% of the correct passes. After leading 0-1 at half time, Barcelona conceded a penalty kick and a goal in the 51st minute. The regular time has ended in a 1-1 draw. We haven’t seen any goals in the extra time, and this game proceeded top penalty shootout. Barcelona was more focused on this part of the game, and they have deservedly won this match. As I’ve mentioned before, Messi should be ready for this game, but even without him Barcelona has a ton of offensive firepower, and I think they can manage just fine.
Well, Bilbao is hot and cold this season, and they were hot at a perfect time against Real Madrid. Bilbao hasn’t beaten Real Madrid since 2005, until a few days ago when they won 1-2. Bilbao has had only 30% of ball possession in that game, 4 shots on goal, 4 corner kicks, 4 big chances created, and 71% of the correct passes. Bilbao was somehow able to score 2 goals in this game, but what kept them alive was their defense. Bilbao might have not been the better team here, but they deserved a win, and a chance to win a trophy. In LaLiga, Bilbao is in 12th place with only 21 points, and they are not scoring a lot of goals, but their defense is solid, and I don’t think Athletic Bilbao will have any problems staying in LaLiga, and the top half of the table. Nilaskoain is the only injured player for Barcelona at the moment. As I’ve mentioned earlier, Bilbao has been hot and cold so far this season, and now it’s time to be cold again, but this is the finals, and Bilbao has to do everything possible to play another good game and possibly win the Spanish Super Cup.
Barcelona has beaten Bilbao in LaLiga 10 days ago on the road, and they are the better team here. Barcelona hasn’t lost in their last 9 games while being on a 4-game winning streak. The form is relevant, but not as much when the trophy is on the line. I’m sure Bilbao is filled with confidence after their win against Real Madrid, but I’m not sure it will be enough to beat Barcelona.
