SC Freiburg is hosting Borussia Dortmund at Schwarzwald-Stadion in round 20 in the German Bundesliga.
Freiburg is having a great season so far, and they are in solid 9th place with 27 points, 33 scored goals, and 32 conceded goals. Offensively, Freiburg is solid, but their defense could be better. In their last 6 games in Bundesliga, Freiburg has 3 wins, 2 losses, and 1 draw. In each of their 3 wins, Freiburg has scored 10 goals while conceding at least 2 goals in each of their 2 losses. Freiburg was playing against Wolfsburg on the road in their last goal, and they have had 55% of ball possession in that game, 2 shots on goal, 10 corner kicks, 0 big chances created, and 76% of the correct passes. As I’ve said, Freiburg’s defense could be better, and they have conceded 3 goals in this game, and they ended up losing this match 3-0. Grifo and Petersen have scored 7 goals so far this season, while Sallai added 5 goals. Demirovic and Grifo have each added 4 assists. Flekken, Kwon, and Sallai are all injured for Freiburg at the moment. I believe Freiburg will stay far from the relegation zone, but I don’t think they will be able to get to that Europa League spot.
I’ve said this a few times already this season, and I will say it again, I guess. Borussia is now on a 2-game winning streak, and hopefully, their slump ended. Earlier this week Borussia was playing against Paderborn in the DFB Pokal, and they have won this game 3-2 after extra time. After 2 losses in a row in Bundesliga, Borussia was playing against Augsburg at home, and they were a much better team in this game with 67% of ball possession, 5 shots on goal, 10 corner kicks, 2 big chances created, and a solid 87% of the correct passes. Borussia was losing in the 10th minute, but they were able to tie the score by halftime. With 2 more goals in the second half, Borussia Dortmund has won this game 3-1. Borussia was expecting to be in the title race this season, but that didn’t happen, and Borussia is now in 6th place with 32 points, 38 scored goals, and 27 conceded goals. Haaland is still the leading goalscorer for Borussia with 14 goals, but the problem is that no one else is scoring in Dortmund. Sancho has 3 goals and 9 assists. Hazard, Schmelzer, Zagadou, Witsel, Meunier, and Burki are all injured for Borussia Dortmund. Borussia is still playing in the Champions League, and if they can stay consistent, they will be a dangerous team.
Freiburg hasn’t lost any of their last 6 home games, but their last home win against Dortmund was back in 2010. The trends are on Borussia’s side in this matchup, and Borussia is the better team here, but I think Freiburg could score a goal here because of Borussia’s bad defense. I’m taking goals here.
