RB Leipzig and Liverpool are clashing in Hungary at Puskas Arena due to the Covid-19 restrictions in the round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League.
Leipzig is on a 4-game winning streak, while they won 5 of their last 6 games. Leipzig is Bayern’s closest competitor in Bundesliga this season, and they are in second place with 44 points. Leipzig was hosting Augsburg in their last Bundesliga game, and they were the better team with 59% of ball possession, 6 shots on goal, 3 corner kicks, 3 big chances created, and a decent 83% of the correct passes. Leipzig has won this game 2-1 with 2 scored goals in the first half. Leipzig was in the group with PSG in the Champions League, and even though they ended with the same number of points, Leipzig ended in second place because of the worse goal differential. Angelino has been Leipzig’s best player in the Champions League with 3 goals and 6 assists, and he is expected to be in the starting lineup. Hartmann, Laimer, Forsberg, Henrichs, and Szoboszlai are all injured for Leipzig. With great defense, and an offense that can explode at any time, Leipzig is a dangerous team, and they can be extremely good on the defensive end, and I think they have a good shot at advancing to the next stage of this competition.
Liverpool is in a massive, massive slump right now, and they have lost their last 3 games in a row while winning only 2 of their last 8 games. With this latest losing streak, Liverpool’s chances to defend the EPL title are now gone, and they are in 4th place with 40 points. Instead of the title, Liverpool will be fighting for the Champions League, and it’s a tough competition in the EPL. In their last game against Leicester on the road, Liverpool was dominant with 62% of ball possession, 4 shots on goal, 12 corner kicks, 2 big chances created, and a decent 83% of the correct passes. Liverpool was leading in the 67th minute, but with 3 conceded goals in 7 minutes, Liverpool has lost this match 3-1. Jota has scored 4 goals for Liverpool in the Champions League while Salah added 3 goals. Van Dijk, Gomez, Matip, Jota, Keita, and Fabinho are all injured for Liverpool. After winning their group in the Champions League, dominantly I might add, Liverpool looked fantastic, but all the injuries and bad form in their team have made them look like an average English team. Sure, Liverpool still has immense offensive firepower, but the defense matters, and that is something Liverpool is desperately missing at the moment.
Leipzig is on a 4-game winning streak, while Liverpool is on a 3-game losing streak. Leipzig and Liverpool have never played against each other in the past. I have a feeling this could be a tough game where Liverpool will try and focus on the defense, but I don’t think they will succeed. I’m taking Leipzig to win this first leg.
