Lazio is hosting Bayern Munich at Stadio Olimpico in the Round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League.
Lazio has been in fantastic form, and they have won 3 of their last 4 games while scoring 6 goals during this streak, and conceding 4 goals. In the Serie A standings, Lazio is now in 6th place with 43 points, just 1 point behind Roma in the Champions League spot. In the group stage of the Champions League, Lazio ended in second place with 10 points, a solid 11 scored goals, and 7 conceded goals. Immobile has been in good form in the Champions League, and he has scored 5 goals in 4 games for Lazio, while Correa added 2 goals and 2 assists. Felipe, Strakosha, and Radu are all injured for Lazio at the moment. In their last Serie A game, Lazio was playing Sampdoria, and they have had 56% of ball possession, 6 shots on goal, 4 corner kicks, 3 big chances created, and a decent 84% of the correct passes. Lazio scored a goal in the 24th minute, and it was enough for a 1-0 win. Lazio is in good form, and they certainly have enough quality to make life complicated for Bayern, but I’m not sure they can stay focused throughout both legs of this Round of 16.
Bayern is a fantastic team, but they have hit a dry spell, which was to be expected I guess with the number of games Bayern has played. Bayern is winless in their last 2 games, and even though they have scored 4 goals during this stretch, they have conceded 5 goals. Despite this dry spell, Bayern is still at the top of Bundesliga with 49 points, but their defense has been bad, and Leipzig is now only 2 points away from Bayern. In the group stage, Bayern hasn’t lost a game, and they have won their group with 16 points, an impressive 18 scored goals, and only 5 conceded goals. Bayern is far from their best form, and their defense seems to be getting worse. Lewandowski and Coman have scored 3 goals each in the Champions League, while Sane and Goretzka added 2 goals each. Kimmich has added 3 assists. Tolisso, Nubel, Muller, Gnabry, Costa, and Pavard are all injured, and they will miss this game. As I’ve mentioned, Bayern is struggling a little bit lately, especially on the defensive end where they are slow and prone to making mistakes.
Lazio and Bayern have never played against each other in the past. Lazio is in solid form, while Bayern is struggling, but that doesn’t mean they are a bad team. Lazio is a good team, and they could definitely score a goal against Bayern’s defense. I think Bayern will win this matchup, whether it will be in the first leg or it will take two legs, but I see Bayern advancing to the next stage.
