Netherlands is welcoming Austria to Johan Cruijff Arena in round 2 of Group C in the Euro Cup 2021. Netherlands got lucky in their first game, but they got a win out of it. Austria was the better team against North Macedonia, and thanks to that win Austria is now at the top of their group.
Netherlands is playing their best soccer since De Boer took over the team, and they now have 4 wins in their last 5 games. In their game against Ukraine, Netherlands has had 62% of ball possession, 7 shots on goal, 5 corner kicks, 3 big chances created, and a high 90% of the correct passes. With 2 quick goals in the second half, Netherlands got ahead, but they almost gambled it all away. Ukraine was able to score 2 goals and tie the score, but Netherlands was lucky to score the third one, and they have won that match 3-2. Dumfries, Weghorst, and Wijnaldum have each scored 1 goal for Netherlands so far, while Ake added 1 assist. Even though they have won, it wasn’t enough for the top spot, but they have a chance to take it in this game. Netherlands has been solid in the attacking end, but their defense is still not set, and good teams will know how to use it to their advantage.
Austria was dominating against North Macedonia, but that was just a raw possession because they struggled with creating chances in the first half. Austria has had 63% of ball possession in that game, 6 shots on goal, 4 corner kicks, 5 big chances created, and 84% of the correct passes. Overall, this was a solid game for Austria, and after not scoring a goal in 3 games, it was refreshing for Austria to score 3 in one game. Of course, North Macedonia is not a strong team, but they are not a bad team either. Lainer, Gregoritsch, and Arnautovic have each scored 1 goal, but Arnautovic has celebrated his goal in a way he really shouldn’t have, and not he could get kicked out of the Euro Cup because of it. Austria is now at the top of their group, and I think they will need 1 more point to qualify for the next stage. Austria is a solid team, and their defense actually looked well in that game against North Macedonia, but I repeat, North Macedonia is not among the best teams in Europe.
Netherlands and Austria have played against each other 6 times, and Netherlands has won all 6 of those games. These two teams are at the top of the table, and I think this will be a fun game where we will see a lot of chances and goals. Both teams could use a win or at least a draw, but I will stick to goals.
