Hungary is hosting France at Ferenc Puskas Arena in round 2 of Group F in the Euro Cup 2021. Hungary has had a good game against Portugal, but unfortunately for them, they lost in the last 10 minutes of the game. France has won their first game of this tournament, and they have been playing impeccable defense for some time now.
Hungary has the home-field advantage in the group stage of this tournament, but it didn’t mean a lot in their first game against Portugal. Hungary has had 30% of ball possession in that game, 3 shots on goal, 0 corner kicks, 0 big chances created, and 75% of the correct passes. Hungary was playing solid defense, and they have had a canceled goal in the second half, but in the 84th, then 87th, and the 92nd minute, Hungary has conceded 3 goals, and they ended up losing this match. The group Hungary is in is the hardest in the tournament, and nobody expects them to advance to the next stage, but that will leave Hungary to play without pressure as best as they can. Not only it’s hard to imagine Hungary winning a game in this group, it’s hard to imagine they will score a goal, but it would be nice if they did in front of their fans.
France is absolutely brilliant, and they haven’t conceded a goal in their last 5 games. In their opening match of the tournament, France was playing against Germany, and they were under a lot of pressure. France has had only 38% of ball possession, 1 shot on goal, 3 corner kicks, 0 big chances created, and 82% of the correct passes. This was a game where France focused on their defense and waited on the opportunities from the counterattacks. Germany has scored an own goal, and while France has had 2 canceled goals in the second half, it was their defense that has won this game 1-0. There is no need to name French players again because there are so many great players, but at some point in this tournament, France will need to step up and actually play some offense. At the moment, France is in second place in this group, and that is when we will actually see if they can keep it up on both ends, which shouldn’t even be the question. France has the depth, the quality on each position, and they will be really hard to beat.
I don’t want to underestimate Hungary, but they are certainly not the team that will beat France, especially when France is playing such a good defense. Hungary will try to go toe to toe with France here, but I think they will quickly discover that is not happening.
