SK Sturm Graz is welcoming Red Bull Salzburg to Merkur Arena in round 1 of the Austrian Bundesliga. Sturm is a solid Austrian team that ended in 3rd place last season, and they are going to be playing in the Europa League qualifications.  Salzburg is the best team in Austria, by far, and they have won another title last season.

Sturm has been decent in the preseason with 2 wins, 2 losses, and a draw, while they have won their first match in the OFB Cup last week. Since Sturm was playing against a lower division team, they haven’t had a tough job, and they have won that match 0-9. There were no notable departures from Sturm as of right now, but they did sign a couple of good players who will certainly help them in the title run. Overall, last season was solid for Sturm, and they have scored 52 goals, but it was their defense that got them to 3rd place. Sturm has conceded 34 goals. Jantscher was Sturm’s best player last season with 9 assists, and he will be one of their best players this season as well. Sturm can’t really count on the title next to Salzburg, but they are certainly good enough to fight for the Champions League spot.

As usual, Salzburg has won another title in Austria last season as well, and they have scored impressive 94 goals in 32 games. Defensively, Salzburg was good as well with 33 conceded goals. Daka was Salzburg’s leading goalscorer last season, but he has left the club and gone to Leicester. Mwepu has also left the team and has signed with Brighton, while Ramalho went to PSV. There have been a few signings in Salzburg as well, but no one is notable as of right now. Salzburg is the club that produces a lot of young and talented players, and with Daka gone, I’m confident another talent will emerge for Red Bull Salzburg. In the preseason, Salzburg has 2 wins, 1 loss, and 1 draw, and they have also won their OFB Cup match last weekend. Even though Salzburg has won the title, they are not going straight to the Champions League group stage, but they will be playing in the qualifications. As far as the Bundesliga goes, Salzburg is definitely the biggest favorite to win the title once again, and the chances are they will.

Sturm hasn’t won any of their last 3 games against Salzburg, and the trends are on Salzburg’s side in this matchup. This is the first round, and we are getting a great matchup here, but with both teams being kind of sloppy on the defensive end, I will stick to goals in this one.
