The USWNT and New Zealand face off on Saturday in an Olympic showdown at Saitama Stadium in Saitama, Japan. The last time these two teams faced off was in May of 2019, and it was the United States that we’re able to win 5-0. Both of these teams lost their first game, so this is a must-win for both squads

Anything less than winning the gold is going to be considered a big disappointment for this team, but they have their backs against the wall after really struggling in their first game against Sweden. In that game against Sweden, they were dominated early, and they gave up their first goal in the 25th minute. The US gave up two more goals after that, and that led to the blowout defeat. Heading into that game, the United States hadn’t lost in 44 straight games, and they need three points in this game. The United States still has firepower all over the pitch, and they need the offense to be good in this game. The US needs to control the pace of this game and try to score a goal or two early.

On the other side of this matchup is New Zealand who opened up their Olympic tournament with a loss against Australia. New Zealand didn’t play terribly, but they didn’t play well enough as they were defeated 2-1. New Zealand gave up a goal in the 20th minute and 33rd minute. In stoppage time, New Zealand had a goal scored by Gabi Rennie but that wasn’t enough, as they were defeated by a goal. In this game, it’s going to be all about the defense slowing down the United States attack.

The United States is going to get back on the right track with their offense in this game. Look for the US offense to run up the score, New Zealand’s defense to be awful, and this game is going to go over the 3.5 total.
