AS Monaco is welcoming OSC Lille to Stade Louis II in round 14 of the French Ligue 1. Monaco has been very inconsistent so far this season, but they have been able to produce chances in every game. Lille has been even more inconsistent this season, and for a team who won the title last season, they don’t look like a serious contender.

Monaco is now in a low 11th place with 18 points, but they are only 5 points away from the Champions League spot, and it’s still early in the season. Offensively, Monaco can create chances, but they need to start scoring more goals because their defense is not picking up the slack. Monaco hasn’t scored a goal in their last 3 games, but they have lost only 1 of those 3 games. In their last game in Ligue 1 against Reims, Monaco has had 58% of ball possession, 3 shots on goal, 6 corner kicks, 1 big chance created, and 79% of the correct passes. Neither team has done anything special in this game, and overall, this wasn’t a particularly good game. The final score was 0-0. Of the 17 goals Monaco has scored, Ben Yedder has 6 to his name, while Henrique added 4 assists. The good news for Monaco is their injury list has shortened, and that will certainly help them win this game.

Lille has been worse than Monaco on both ends, and they are not even a shadow of a team they were last season. Lille has scored 16 goals so far, which isn’t bad, but with 19 conceded goals in 11 games, I’m not sure what more can Lille expect besides 12th place in the standings. Surprisingly, Lille is in 2nd place in the Champions League, but they are playing against the leader of this group next week, Red Bull Salzburg. David is the leading goalscorer for Lille with 8 goals, but he got injured while playing for Canada the other day, and he will most likely miss this game. Jardim and Botman are both also injured. Lille has won only 1 of their last 6 games, while they tied in their latest Ligue 1 game against Angers. Lille has had 46% of ball possession in that game, 6 shots on goal, 4 corner kicks, 3 big chances created, and 82% of the correct passes. After leading since the 27th minute, Lille was under pressure, and they couldn’t hold onto that lead. In the 83rd minute Angers has scored, and Lille has also conceded a red card in the 97t minute. The final score was 1-1. Lille can still reach that Champions League spot, but their dreams of defending the title are long gone.

Monaco hasn’t lost any of their last 5 home games, and they have been dominant at home in this matchup. Neither team is playing consistently well, and both teams could use a win here, but I think Monaco will get it because Lille will focus on their Champions League game next week.
