Dynamo Kyiv and SL Benfica are facing off at Olimpysky National Sports Complex in round 1 of Group E of the UEFA Champions League. Dynamo is one of the best teams in Ukraine, they are in solid form, but I think the Europa League is more their level right now. Benfica is at the top of the Primeira Liga after 5 games, and they are still undefeated with 5 straight wins.

Dynamo is a decent team, a great team for the Ukrainian Premier League where they are at the top of the table, but the Champions League is a much stronger beast. Dynamo is still undefeated in the Premier League, they have scored an impressive 22 goals in 7 games, while they conceded only 2 goals. In their last game in the Premier League, Dynamo was a much dominant team against Metalist with 63% of ball possession, 8 shots on goal, and 7 corner kicks. Dynamo has won this game 0-2. There are some good players in Dynamo, some of them you might even hear of, but I just don’t think they are good enough of a team to advance to the next stage.

As good Dynamo is in Ukraine, Benfica has been equally good in Portugal. Benfica has started this season with 5 straight wins in the Primeira Liga, and they are at the top of the table with 15 points. In their last game against Santa Clara, Benfica has had 70% of ball possession, 5 shots on goal, 2 corner kicks, 3 big chances created, and a solid 87% of the correct passes. It took a while for Benfica to score, but once they did, they were unstoppable. Benfica has scored 4 more goals in the second half, and they have deservedly won this game 0-4. Benfica has barely gotten into the Champions League this season, and they have gotten into a strong group where it will take a lot from them to get to one of the top two spots. I think Benfica is hoping to get to the next stage, but I just don’t think they can next to Bayern and Barcelona. A lot of Benfica’s players have been playing for their national teams, and most of them did great, but now it’s the time to focus on the Champions League where they will need every point they can get.

Of the 2 games between these two teams, Benfica has won both, and they haven’t even conceded a goal. Benfica is the better team here, but if Dynamo wants to have a chance at advancing to the next stage, they will need to step up their game, at least at home. I’m seeing the draw in this one.
