Lille OSC is welcoming Sevilla to Stade Pierre Mauroy in round 3 of Group G in the UEFA Champions League. Lille is having a lot of problems with consistency this season, and if they gain momentum, it doesn’t last long. Sevilla is playing really well this season, especially on the defensive end, but they are still without a win in the Champions League.

Honestly, after Lille won the Ligue 1 title last season, I expected a lot more from them this season, but it doesn’t look well for them. Lille has 3 wins in their last 5 games, but as I’ve mentioned, they have a lot of problems with consistency. In their last game against Clermont, Lille has had 57% of ball possession, 2 shots on goal, 10 corner kicks, 7 big chances created, and 82% of the correct passes. Yes, it wasn’t the best game from Lille, but even like this, they should have used at least a couple of their chances. Unfortunately for Lille, they have lost this game 1-0. In the Champions League, Lille is in last place, and they have scored only 1 goal so far, which was scored by Yilmaz. Ligue 1 isn’t any better for Lille, and they need to decide whether to focus on Europe or Ligue 1.

Sevilla has lost only 1 game so far this season, and that was against Granada just before the international break. We know that Sevilla isn’t an offensively oriented team, but they can score goals, and that is enough for them at the moment. With 2 draws, Sevilla is in 2^nd place in this group, and I think they will be advancing past the group stage. In their latest game against Celta Vigo this past weekend, Sevilla has had 54% of ball possession, 2 shots on goal, 4 corner kicks, 1 big chance created, and 82% of the correct passes. It wasn’t the greatest game from Sevilla, but it got the job done. Sevilla has won this game 0-1. As far as the Champions League goes, Sevilla has scored 2 goals, and both were scored by Rakitic from the penalty spot. With their defense set, Sevilla must now focus on the offense and scoring more goals, because they won’t be able to stop every team that comes their way, and that is when they will need more goals.

It’s been 15 years since these two teams have met so there is no point looking at those games. Sevilla is clearly in better form, and they are the better team overall, but I don’t expect this to be an easy game, for either team. In this case, I gotta go with Sevilla.
