Montpellier is welcoming Olympique de Marseille to Stade de la Mosson in round 1 of the French Ligue 1. Montpellier is an average team, and their preseason has been terrible, and I don’t think Ligue 1 will be any better for them. Marseille is a solid team, they can play great soccer, but they have disappointed last season, again.

Montpellier hasn’t had a good preseason, and they have lost 3 of their 4 games, and they have conceded at least 1 goal in each of those 4 games. In Ligue 1 last season, Montpellier was actually solid with 60 scored goals, but their defense was terrible with 62 conceded goals in 38 games. With 54 points, Montpellier ended in 8th place in Ligue 1 standings. There haven’t been any notable arrivals to Montpellier in the offseason, while a bunch of players left the club in free transfers. There are a few great players in this Montpellier team, and they could repeat their last season, but only if they improve their defense, and even then, I don’t think we can expect much more than the middle of the table for Montpellier.

Going back to last season, Marseille has lost only 2 of their last 18 games, but it was too little too late for Marseille and their Champions League hopes. Marseille ended last season in 5th place, and they will be playing in the Europa League this season. Defensively, Marseille was solid with 47 conceded goals, and their offense wasn’t bad either with 54 scored goals. As far as their preseason goes, Marseille hasn’t lost any of their games, they scored a goal in each of those 7 games, and they were even able to keep 1 clean sheet. The biggest departure from Marseille is definitely Thauvin who left for Tigres in Mexico and Lopez to Sassuolo. There has been a great addition to this team, starting with Under and Lopez from Roma, Guendouzi from Arsenal, and Balerdi from Borussia Dortmund. Everyone always expects a lot from Marseille, and they expect even more from them as well, but they always end up disappointing everyone. The transfer window is still open, and Marseille could lose some players, but they also have the opportunity to sign a few more players that will help them in their Champions League battle.

When playing at home, Montpellier hasn’t lost to Marseille in their last 4 games, while Marseille hasn’t lost any of their last 8 games. Marseille is in much better form, but those were all friendly games, however, we are getting plus money for Marseille, and I will take it.
