Olympique de Marseille is hosting Strasbourg at Orange Velodrome in round 38 of the French Ligue 1. Marseille was one of the best teams in the league just a month ago, but everything went downhill for them, and at the wrong time. Strasbourg is fighting for the Europa League, and for the Conference League as well, which they might qualify for because they are in good form.

Marseille is in bad form, and they are missing a few key players. With only 1 win in their last 5 games, Marseille has dropped to 3rd place, and they got knocked out of the Conference League by Feyenoord. That 3rd place is the Champions League qualifications spot, but Marseille could lose that spot if they lose in this game. Marseille’s defense is still solid, but their offense is not producing much since Payet got injured. Alongside Payet, De La Fuente is injured as well, Saliba is suspended because of the yellow cards, while Bakambu is still questionable. Payet has been Marseille’s best player this season with 12 goals and 9 assists, and he will be missed in the last round. This will be a big game for Marseille, they are good enough to get the job done here, but it will be hard without their best player.

Strasbourg has lost only 1 of their last 15 games, and I gotta say, they are the nicest surprise in all of the top leagues. With 63 points, Strasbourg is now in 5th place, and even though the Europa League is very close, the Conference League is more their reality right now. For Strasbourg to qualify for Europe, Rennais would need to lose in their games, and Strasbourg has to win in their game. With 60 scored goals, Strasbourg has been in great goalscoring form this season, and they have been better than the average team. Ajorque has scored 12 goals and added 8 assists for Strasbourg this season, while Diallo and Gameiro added 11 goals each. Dion is injured, Lienard is suspended, and they will both be missed in this game. Strasbourg is on an amazing run, they are playing well on both ends, and this is their golden chance to play in Europe after a long time.

The trends are on Marseille’s side in this matchup, but Strasbourg has been excellent on the road this season. Marseille is missing their best player, but they are still a good team on both ends. I’m leaning towards Strasbourg, and I will go with my gut.
