Hungary is hosting Portugal at Ferenc Puskas Stadium in round 1 of Group F in the Euro Cup 2021. Hungary is coming into this matchup in good form, and they are undefeated in their last 11 games. Portugal is one of the best teams in Europe, and they are undefeated in their last 6 games.
This is going to be a hard group for Hungary, but their form is good, and they are solid on the defensive end, which will be important for them in the group stage. In their last 2 games, Hungary has a draw and a loss. In their last game against Ireland, Hungary has had 60% of ball possession, 7 shots on goal, and 7 corner kicks. Despite being the dominant team, Hungary couldn’t score a goal here, and this game has ended in a 0-0 draw. Two of Hungary’s best players are Leipzig’s teammates, goalkeeper Gulacsi, and Orban who will lead Hungary’s defense. Offensively, Hungary has been good so far, but all the teams they played against are some of the weakest teams in Europe, but I think the defense will be more important for them in this match, and it will need to be at the highest level possible.
In their last two friendly games, Portugal was playing against Spain, and that game has ended in a 0-0 draw, while they have won their last game against Israel. Portugal was the better team in that match with 60% of ball possession, 8 shots on goal, and 6 corner kicks, and the final score of this match was 4-0 in favor of Portugal. When we take a look at Portugal’s roster, it’s hard to say who is the most dangerous player between Ronaldo, Felix, Jota, and Silva, but in addition to these strikers, Portugal also has Fernandes, Silva, and Neves, three excellent midfielders capable of scoring and assisting for a ton of goals. Portugal is pretty stacked up, and they are mostly doubled up in each of the positions on the field which will give them a much-needed depth in this tournament. Is Portugal one of the favorites, they certainly are, but I think Ronaldo will need to adapt his game and put his ego aside if they want to reach the finals once again. This is a tough group, and Portugal will need a win here to get some advantage from France and Germany, otherwise, they might find themselves struggling to advance to the next stage.
I know Hungary is in great form and on a nice positive streak, but so is Portugal, and they are the better team here. Hungary has never beaten Portugal in the past, and I don’t think they wills tart now, despite playing at home. I’m taking Portugal to get a nice win in their first game in this tournament..
