Uruguay and Ecuador face off on Thursday in a CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying game at Estadio Campeón del Siglo. With these two teams so close in the standings, this is a huge game for each team.
These two teams last faced off in October of 2020 and it was Ecuador that came away with the 4-2 victory.
Uruguay currently sits in 4th place in the standings having picked up 12 points. Ecuador last Thursday was able to come away with a 2-0 victory over Paraguay. Uruguay has a lot of confidence coming into this game after beating Bolivia in the last game. Giorgian de Arrascaeta opened up the scoring in the 15th minute and he had another goal by penalty in the 67th minute. Uruguay ended up with a total of four goals, but the defense did struggle a little bit giving up two goals, and in this game, the defense is going to need to a lot better.
On the other side of this matchup is Ecuador who currently sit in 3rd place in the standings with 13 points. Ecuador last Thursday was able to come away with a 2-0 victory over Paraguay. On Sunday, Uruguay wasn’t as impressive against Chile, and the game ended in a 0-0 draw. Junior Somoza picked up a red card in the 63rd minute and he will have to miss this match. Ecuador had 54 percent of the possession, but he only had four shots on goal and they need to get more offensive chances in this game. Two games ago, Ecuador scored two goals after the 88th minute, and they are lucky to not have played to a couple straight draws.
Uruguay likes to play an open-style game, and I expect many scoring chances by both teams. It’s truly a toss-up who is going to win this game, but both teams will have at least two goals scored. Back the over.
