The United States Open for the women starts Monday with American (1) Serena Williams trying to defend her title. Williams opens with former Grand Slam champion Francesca Schiavone of Italy.

A female American has won the U.S. Open 22 times in the open era which dates back to 1968. Five times a Belgian, five times a German, three times an Australian and two times a Russian has won the ladies’ United States Open.

With Maria Sharapova pulling out of the U.S. Open Russia doesn’t stand much of a chance. Belgium no longer has Kim Clijsters or Justin Henin making the likelihood a countrywoman could win New York quite small. Belgian (12) Kirsten Flipkens has the best chance although a quarterfinals clash may lay ahead with Williams.

It’s Serena’s to lose, but 2011 champ Samantha Stosur will have something to say about that. American Venus Williams and Russian (27) Svetlana Kuznestova are the only two other past United States Open Champions in the field.

Tyrone’s Women’s U.S. Open Draw of Doom: The top-seeded American has German (8) Angelique Kerber along with young guns (23) Jamie Hampton and (15) Sloane Stephens in her section too. However, the deadliest draw has to be 2012 Runner-Up (2) Victoria Azarenka’s of Belarus.

Azarenka’s first three matches should be smooth sailing with a young German, then Canadian or Serb and Frenchwoman (26) Alize Cornet. Too bad Vika’s fourth bout then jumps about 10 pegs in toughness with Slovak (17) Dominika Cibulkova, Serb (13) Ana Ivanovic or German Julia Goerges possibly awaiting the Belarusian. United States’ dark-horses Varvara Lepchenko and Christina McHale also sit in this packed section to likely determine’s Azarenka’s fourth-round foe.

Czech (7) Petra Kvitova, (11) Stosur, Russian (20) Nadia Petrova and German (28) Mona Barthel are the seeds in the other side of Victoria’s group. German Andrea Petkovic could collide with Kvitova in a blockbuster second-round match. Petkovic leads Petra 4-3 winning the last two rumbles in Cincinnati and Toronto.

Slovak Daniela Hantuchova is also in the Belarusian’s section which occupies six qualifiers and three wildcards. Despite there being five qualis and one WC in the top-half of Azarenka’s semi this section could be the most unpredictable with the aforementioned big names and games.

Tyrone’s Women’s U.S. Open First-Round Upset: The biased American approach is Mallory Burdette over (27) Kuznetsova. With Burdette stuck in a six-match losing streak and Svetlana slumping her shoulders five of the last six times she’s hit the singles court I’m not about to predict an outcome between these two women. Plus Mallory is nursing a right shoulder injury so a retirement could loom.

I said in my men’s preview I didn’t like that many upsets and on paper certainly and possibly on the court the ladies could see less blood shed. The first round has a couple plausible upsets and although I’m not crazy about this one it fits the American bias equation. Williams over (12) Flipkens.

Venus beat Kirsten during a 2007 Federations Cup showdown 7-5 6-2. The American then bageled the Belgian during their last and only other encounter before Flipkens flipped the script in Toronto winning 0-6 6-4 6-2.

Afterward Williams admitted that taking the first frame at love was probably the worst thing for her. However at the United States Open I doubt Venus becomes too cocky or complacent no matter how the first set transpires.

Tyrone’s Women’s U.S. Open Quarterfinals Picks: (1) Serena Williams Vs. (8) Angelique Kerber, (3) Agnieszka Radwanska POL Vs. (9) Jelena Jankovic SRB, (6) Caroline Wozniacki DEN Vs. (27) Svetlana Kuznetsova, (2) Victoria Azarenka Vs. (11) Samantha Stosur
