The Line: Stanislas Wawrinka See the Latest Odds
Stanislas Wawrinka and Feliciano Lopez will meet in the fourth round of the 2014 Wimbledon.
Wawrinka has played solid tennis thus far, winning nine of 10 sets in his first three matches. Wawrinka’s most recent victory over Denis Istomin was decided in three short sets. In that win, Wawrinka hit 33 winners and converted four of his five break point opportunities. While Wawrinka hasn’t beaten anybody that impressive yet, he’s clearly looking to make up for such a quick exit in this year’s French Open. This is the first time Wawrinka has reached the fourth round of the Wimbledon since 2009. However, Wawrinka has never reached the quarterfinals of this tournament. In hopes of snapping that streak, the short matches should help him.

Lopez has looked really good in this tournament, winning nine of 10 sets and becoming a tiebreak machine. Lopez’s most recent win came over John Isner, a match he won in four sets, and won all three of his sets on tiebreaks. That’s quite impressive considering Isner is usually awesome in tiebreaks as well, but Lopez has won eight of his nine sets in this tournament on tiebreaks. So, while Lopez hasn’t played many sets, the amount of sets being dragged out to the max gives Wawrinka an advantage as far as rest is concerned. Lopez does have decent history at the Wimbledon, as it’s the only Grand Slam he’s reached the quarterfinals, a feat he’s accomplished twice.
These players have met five times in the past and Wawrinka leads the series, 3-2. The most recent meeting came in the 2013 Paris Masters, a match Wawrinka won in three sets. This will be the first time the two have played one another on grass.
With the lack of rest both players are going to receive, I have to go with Wawrinka. Not only has he had much quicker matches, but he’s also the marathon man that almost never seems to get tired and is built for many matches in short time.
Give me Wawrinka to win SU.
