Jurgen Melzer and Marcel Granollers will clash Monday in the first round of the 2014 US Open.
Jurgen Melzer has had a really rough year that doesn’t involve much winning. Melzer’s last victory was a doubles match in Kitzbuhel, meaning he’s lost eight straight matches. It’s safe to say Jurgen Melzer is on the back end of his career at the age of 33 years old and will likely never come close to the No. 8 ranking he had back in 2011. As for grand slams, Melzer has been eliminated in the first round in six of his last 10 appearances. Of course, Jurgen Melzer backed out of this year’s Australian Open with a shoulder injury. Melzer enters this match with very little confidence and very little past success.

Marcel Granollers picked up a win in Winston-Salem over Paul-Henri Mathieu, but he’s another tennis player who has also struggled this season. Granollers is currently ranked No. 42 in the world and is still struggling to find that consistent play, as he continues to lose tight matches and can never seem to get over the hump. The one thing that Marcel Granollers has going for him is his success in recent grand slams, as he reached the fourth round of this year’s French Open, and he reached the fourth round in last year’s US Open. Granollers is also five years younger than his opponent.
These two have played in the past and Jurgen Melzer has won both meetings in straight sets, with the most recent coming in the 2013 Miami Masters.
Despite the success and the experience advantage, I’m not sure how you don’t take the minor chalk and back Marcel Granollers. He has the much better form at this point in the season and has performed better in grand slams, while Melzer seems to be on the tail end of his career.
