Matthias Bachinger and Andy Murray will meet in the second round of the 2014 US Open on Wednesday.
Matthias Bachinger advanced to the second round of a grand slam for the first time in his career with a three set victory over Radek Stepanek. Including qualifying and doubles, Bachinger has won 10 of his last 11 matches, making this probably the most successful stretch of his career. Bachinger has really caught a hot streak and lost just seven games in his first match that was over in no time. Rest isn’t an issue for Matthias Bachinger, but we’re talking about a player who hasn’t had any great success in his career and is truly playing with house money heading into this match. The only thing giving Bachinger a slight chance of winning this match is the overall health of Andy Murray and his occasional struggles here and there.
USA TODAY Sports
Andy Murray won the first two sets against Robin Haase rather easily before dropping the third set 6-1 and needing seven points in the fourth set to close the match. Some would say that Murray took his foot off the gas and gave away the third set, but anybody who watched the match knows he was grabbing at his shoulder and back at certain points. Andy Murray has a long injury history and he can lose to just about anybody when not healthy. Besides, nobody just gives sets away when fatigue is such a big factor in making a deep run in a grand slam. Still, Andy Murray has looked like his old self for the most part, winning five of his last seven matches and those two losses came to resectable players such as Roger Federer and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. However, Murray’s back issues are worth a look before placing anything on this match.
This will be the first time these two players have faced each other.
While I’m concerned Murray isn’t 100 percent, he should have enough in the tank to send Matthias Bachinger packing. Bachinger hasn’t accomplished much of anything in his career and is way over his head in this match.
