Christina McHale and Victoria Azarenka will meet in the second round of the US Open.
Christina McHale won a thrilling three-set match over Chanelle Scheepers to advance to the next round. The first two sets were night and day for both players, but McHale was able to dig deep and pull off a tiebreak victory in the third set. The victory was a much needed confidence boost for Christina McHale, who has really had an inconsistent season that has included early exits in the Canadian, Cincinnati Masters and an early elimination in Washington. Still, if McHale hopes to advance to the third round of the US Open for the third time in four years, she’ll have to have a much cleaner game. Christina McHale dominated the first set 6-2, but lost the second set 6-1. That type of performance isn’t going to work against somebody like Victoria Azarenka.
USA TODAY Sports
Victoria Azarenka nearly continued her disappointing season by almost losing to Misaki Doi, but she was able to bounce back and secure the victory despite dropping the first set. Azarenka has been all over the place all season long, which includes losing to players she shouldn’t and dealing with nagging injuries. With this victory, Victoria Azarenka has split her last six matches and still looks quite vulnerable. Azarenka has always had emotional swings that impact her game, but even in the victory she didn’t look to be 100 percent healthy. The combination of the two could lead to another early exit if she doesn’t clean her game up quickly. Still, despite all of the question marks, Azarenka has still made the final of the US Open the last two years and should never be underestimated.
These two players have split their only two meetings, as Azarenka won in Doha in 2013, while McHale won in Charleston in 2010 after Azarenka retired late in the match. McHale didn’t win a single game in their most recent match.
This is an interesting match and while Azarenka may be the wise pick, I simply didn’t like what I saw from her in her first round. She’s clearly not 100 percent yet and McHale will once again have the support from the home crowd.
Give me McHale in the upset.
