Sam Querrey and Novak Djokovic will meet in the third round of the 2014 US Open.
Sam Querrey pulled off a solid upset in the second round by defeating Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in three sets. Querrey needed only 29 games to win the match and simply overpowered Garcia-Lopez the whole way. Querrey finished with 16 aces, 39 winners and averaged a first serve of 124 mph. Sam Querrey was much better in that match than he was in his round meeting with Maximo Gonzalez that went the distance. If there’s one thing Querrey needs to improve on are his unforced errors, as he has 87 of them through the first two matches. Still, Querrey’s powerful serve is keeping him in matches and has helped him win six of his last seven matches overall. Querrey now looks to advance past the third round of the US Open for the first time since 2010.
USA TODAY Sports
Novak Djokovic is cruising with ease, as he’s only lost 11 games in his first two matches. Djokovic only lost four games in his second round win over Paul-Henri Mathieu. In the speedy victory, Djokovic had 13 aces, put his first serve in play 75 percent of the time and hit 33 winners. Opponents are 2-7 in this tournament against Djokovic when having a chance to break him. Despite poor performances in the Canadian and Cincinnati Masters, Djokovic once again looks to be in top form and seems poised to make another run for the US Open final. Novak Djokovic has not lost in the third round of a major since the 2009 French Open.
These two have met eight times in the past, and Djokovic leads the series, 7-1. Sam Querrey’s only victory over Djokovic was in the 2012 Paris Masters, a match that he came back and won despite losing the first set 6-0. The last time these two met was in Beijing in 2013, a match that Djokovic won in 15 games.
I don’t think there’s any doubt that Novak Djokovic is going to win this match. However, Querrey does have the crowd on his side and he is serving extremely well. I’d consider taking the points if cappin this match, as it should be closer than expected.
