Caroline Wozniacki and Serena Williams will meet in the 2014 US Open final.
Caroline Wozniacki heads into the final on fire, losing only two sets throughout the tournament, including only 10 games in her last two matches. Wozniacki’s most recent win came against Shuai Peng, who was forced to retire in the second set after what appeared to be severe cramping. In the victory, Wozniacki won 70 percent of her first serve points, 73 percent of her net points and hit 19 winners. Certainly not her cleanest match, as 21 unforced errors were her most by far in this tournament, but Wozniacki has won 70 percent or better of her first serve points in five of her six matches and has managed to keep her errors to 17 or less in her first five matches. Caroline Wozniacki is moving extremely well and has shaken the reputation of being too passive, as she’s hitting the ball with confidence and looking to be aggressive whenever she can. Wozniacki has won 19 of her last 22 matches and this is only her second career major final, with her first being in the 2009 US Open.
USA TODAY Sports
Serena Williams has won every set she’s played in this tournament and has played no more than 18 games in a single match. Serena’s most recent victory came against Ekaterina Makarova, a match that she only lost four games. In the remarkably quick match, Serena hit 24 winners, won all six of her net points and won 77 percent of her first serve net points. The really only weakness anybody can point out is Serena's first serve speed still isn’t up to her standards, as she averaged 104 mph in her last match. Still, Serena has kept her unforced errors under 20 in five of her six matches and has won 77 percent or better first serve points in three or her six matches. Serena Williams has been cruising through the competition, winning 11 straight single matches since the loss to her sister, Venus Williams, in the Canadian Masters. Of course, Serena Williams has won the last two US Opens.
These two have played each other nine times and Serena Williams leads the series, 8-1. They’ve met twice this year in the Canadian Masters and Cincinnati Masters, matches that Serena won in three sets. The only time Caroline Wozniacki has beaten Serena came in the 2012 Miami Masters. However, three of the last five matches between these two have gone the distance. This will be the eighth time they’ve each other on hard court.
I wouldn’t put anything past Wozniacki with the way she’s been playing, and there’s no doubt she’ll be the toughest competition Serena has faced in this tournament. However, this is one of a few tournaments where you can count on Serena playing her best and not taking games off. Hard to bet against her in this spot. Look for Serena Williams to three-peat at her favorite tournament.
