John Isner and Feliciano Lopez meet Thursday morning in the second round of the Aegon Championship.
John Isner is coming off a straight set victory over Jared Donaldson. In the victory, Isner won 90 percent of his first serve points and had 21 aces. Isner got 74 percent of his first serves in play and wasn’t broken despite going into a tiebreak in the first set. Isner is hitting his spots as usual and is doing a much better job of finishing matches quicker, which should help his stamina moving forward. The concern with Isner is that he still puts too much pressure on his serve due to his inability to break. Overall, Isner has a little streak going, as he’s won five of his last seven matches and seems to be picking up confidence.
USA TODAY Sports
Feliciano Lopez is coming off a straight set victory over Joao Sousa. Lopez ended the match in just over an hour, as he won 89 percent of his first serve points and had 17 aces. Lopez 63 percent of his first serves in play and wasn’t broken once despite giving Sousa three chances. Lopez need to start this tournament off strong, as he’s split his last six singles matches and has actually had more recent success playing doubles. Lopez needs to play with more consistency, and of course, that dominant victory in the first round could be the turning point to a nice little run.
These two have played each other five times, and Lopez has won three of those meetings. Lopez has beaten Isner in their last two meetings, including their most recent in the 2014 Shanghai Masters. Isner’s last win over Lopez came in Houston in 2012. This will be the second time these two have faced one another on grass.
I don’t trust Lopez, as he’s been really shaky this season and has lost quite a bit to guys less talented than Isner. In a match between two guys who can serve very well, I’m taking Isner and the plus money.
